Homemade Alcohol...

1 packet bakers yeast 3.5 cups sugar 14 cups water
Wouldn't that produce methanol as well as ethanol?
Just wondering...

It would. After that, you distill the alcohol off for 99% alcohol moonshine. Bottle it, age it for 20 years, mix with other things I heard it's great. Or drink it like a hilly billy straight up! There are a few good recipes out there on google for a sugar water 'wine'. Find a brew store, use GOOD wine yeast. You will get much higher content and better tasting moonshine with good yeast good water and good sugar mixed in proper proportions.

So it definately does?
Doesn't methanol make you go blind and your kids are sterile?
(ok maybe not the sterile part, just elaborating)

Do yourself a favor and don't brew alcohol until you're 21. Or get smart about it, either way!

It was delicious, err, I mean me too!!
But seriously, drinking that crap will make you go blind, so why are there people advocating it here?
I looked this up in the archives and people were saying, "just take some sugar and bakers yeast blah blah blah"
Just wondering...
How 'bout that red dawg now?

I don't think that would produce methanol. It would depend on the type of sugar used. Just pure white sugar shouldn't produce any methanol.

yea, I just checked, you'll be ok. Grains can produce methyl, but only certain grains. You do realize that your mixture is going to taste like asshole, right? Are you planning on distilling it or what?

my recipie: 60g active dry yeast 15 cups of sugar 4 gallons of water 60g nutritional yeast
boil 60g nutritianal yeast in half gallon of water for 5 minutes to kill it (used for nutrients), pour into 5 gallon jug with sugar. Add remaining amount of water. Mix/shake
pour half a gallon out into a large bowl or gallon jug. Add active dry yeast and let it bubble for a few minutes... after it foams up, pour it into the jug with the rest of the liquid.
cover with a napkin/tyvek and rubberband... place cap on gently, dont screw it on...
let it sit for about a week and a half and then filter and distill. i used a 2L flask and had to do multiple batches. yield was about 15% alcohol. Make sure you dont half ass the distilation process. Discard the first 10-15ml of liquid that comes out, it taste like shit anyway...
after you distill it, you'll have a clear liquid, run that thru an "active carbon" filter a few times (cotton ball in a funnel, with carbon on top ((after you've washed it)) )
dont try and drink it straight, dilute it with water, or make some absinthe with it...
oh, and dont do what i just said, really...

Baker's yeast is genetically engineered to produce CO2, the alcohol content of a Baker's Yeast Brew would be 1% or less.
At home brew shops you can buy yeast for beer brewing, and the average alcohol content the yeast will produce is 8% (under the right conditions) You might get 5%
BEST? Champagne or wine yeast. You might top out around 18-19%
If you're interested in homemade alcohol, but champagne yeast and go to the farmers market and buy five gallons of fresh apple cider, then search the net for wine recipes and techniques

1% eh? then how is it that 2L of that mash is able to produce 300-350ml of alcohol when distilled?
