"Dissociative Psychedelics"
    #4614395 - 09/03/05 12:08 AM (11 years, 6 months ago)

I have read in many sources including web-based information sites, books, and message board post and I often see people talking about about how dissociatives can be considered psychedelics.

I for one would never think of the dissociative experience as being psychedelic by any means. I can't remember exactly who it was that coined the term psychedelic but I believe that he chose that word incredibly wisely. Psyche meaning mind and delos meaning clear, this is a very good way to describe a key attribute to the effect of hallucinogenic psychedelics. I cannot say the same for dissociatives. I don't believe that a clarity of mind like that given by LSD or psilocin can be achieved through the use of dissociatives.

I have also heard people say that hallucinogens such as DMT, mescaline, LSD, etc. and dissociatives take you in opposite directions to the same destination (spiritual/self exploration and so on). I find this to be a true statement. If these two substances take you in the opposite direction can they be classified under the same category? If so, then it would be arguable that classical music and dimenhydrinate are related. They may take completely different paths but both will probably make you go to sleep easier. Of course it is ridiculous to consider a relation between beautifully orchestrated music with a chemical that makes you drowsy when ingested based solely on the fact that both might help you sleep. So I believe the same could be said that dissociatives are not psychedelics because of the very different path that is taken in comparison to the hallucinogens (which give the experience that the word psychedelic was originally coined to describe).

So anyways, thanks for reading and I guess thats about enough of my ramblings. Take the poll
Do you consider dissociatives to be psychedelic?
You may choose only one
Yes, sir!
No, ma'am

Dissociative are definately not psycedelics... they are in a whole class of their own... with qualities that are different than hallucinogens, but soem aspects of the experiences can be related to psycedelics

Getting high on stuff all relates to each other.

You can take a bunch of any drug you want, and I bet at some point in the day you will say "Man, I am fucked up!"

...doesn't matter what substance it is.

But, I will say dissociatives are a vital part in dramatically expanding a psychadellic experience. To first enhance the mind with a psychadellic, and then seperate it from the body is a beautiful experience.

What you are describing here is ...psychoactivity  Yes,all psychoactives are ..psychoactives and can bring someone in a weird state. Of course the classifications go far beyond the "it got me fucked up" (translating back to intelligent lifeform language "It has a strong psychoactive effect on me). Undoubtedelly some people preffer any altered state of consciousness and coudl use whatever psychoactive, even more those addicted to ASOC.
