I believe it's because the casing layer is non-nutritious, so the contams have nothing to consume/grow on. You should also sterilize your casing mix. I could be wrong but I think that is it, someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

yes. it is non nutritive. I use 1 part verm 3 part peat and some lime. I personally don't sterilize it because peat and verm are relitivly "clean" ingredients. I would pasteurize it if anything.

yes it's a non-nutrition layer but it has to be humid and water do have germs in it so what do i add to the water to be non-notrition as well but will not reject the mycilium

water is also non nutritive. nothing grows in just water. i wouldn't add anything to it. the best guard against contams is healthy mycelia.

What do you mean that nothing grows in straight water. Plenty of micro-organisms live in even tap water. If you think "well, not in my city's tap water!", then you should look at it through a microscope.Take a jar full of water, let it set for a day, then lid it and put away somewhere and forget about it. Go back and look at it again after a while with a microscope. It will be humming with activity.

Sorry that one got me. Well pure H2O distilled water I belive cannot support life in itself but some life will remain in it untill it finds nutes... like spore syringes. I would just PC the casing and try to be as steril as possable.

Fine. nothing grows in pure water. I use distilled with my casing layer. It's about 60cents a gallon. peat is organic material and has a small amount of nutritional value to it, but we are not using it for nutrition, and we pretend it has none. I'm not saying it isn't possible to get contamination on your casing layer. I'm just saying if you do everything right, and have healthy mycelium, you shouldn't have a problem with it. If you have a problem with anything i'm saying or don't understand the point i'm trying to get across just disregard everything i've said and fallow someone elses advice. I'm not trying to start an arguement.

Nor I. I just didnt wanna spread misinformation. Yotflow some people mix a little hydrogen peroxide in with there misting water. It can kill bacteria and other spores but not mycellium or cultured contams. Dubble check this but I would go with a 1-10 ratio of H2O2 to water.
Shaw- You bring up a question I have had.. Im not gonna say that distilled water isnt good for misting but I would think some sterilized mineral water would be better. Plz correct me if im wrong

I put my 50/50 verm/peat and CaCO3 mix in an autoclavable bag and PC it at 15 PSI for 60 minutes...

People that don't sterilize are the ones who complain of contams..

IMO

I would probably agree with the mineral water. The main reason I use distilled is not the fear of organism's in my well water (which there are tons) it is so it won't throw off the ph of my casing recipie to get consistant results. I test it periodically with a "ph growcheck". As to the peroxide, you can if you want. On agar, there is an adjustment phase of usually several days where the mycelia learns to create the enzymes to break down the peroxide, so it may slow your growth just a little. find out what you have. some peroxide is 0.03% and some is 0.06%. it'll say on the bottle. of course you could always just sterilize the water to kill what's in it. Personally i try to avoid chemical warfare and only use untill the problem source is corrected.

Shaw you reminded me of another way that hasent been mentioned to help keep contams out of casing. Yotflow If you keep your Ph level slightly above 7 it will not be as hospitable to some contams as it would if it were more acidic. What Ph reading do you try for Shaw and what do you use to adjust it? You could probally be more helpfull than I on this one.
