Pereskiopsis flowering/ setting seeds
    #4611563 - 09/02/05 03:34 AM (18 years, 7 months ago)

I have really loved this plant! It is one of the easiest plants to grow!
It grows very fast, propagates extremely easily with cuttings and provides the best grafting stock for seedlings!

But I haven?t seen it producing flowers/ seeds. I would like to?

So, I planted a relatively big plant and a small untrimmed cutting to the ground to see if it?s going to flower. Any ideas?

I suspect that pereskiopsis don?t flower because they are constantly trimmed (taking cuttings)

Beautiful! I will leave one of my pereskiopsis without touching it. It's already one year old. Looks like a bush. Although seeds are something you will never need. Except if you find a great spot and throw them, knowing they will survive for years.

>>Although seeds are something you will never need

It true that it propagates easily with cuttings. But seeds promote the genetical diversity of these species and are an easier way to trade Pereskiopsis.

I haven?t heard a lot of people having seeds from Pereskiopsis and I am not sure how easy is it.

High P fertilizer may promote flowering?
?any other ideas?

stess will induse generative growth such as water starvation...be care full you cant flower a dead plant
the main thing regulating flowing in most plants is the balanse of resperation to photosynthese
what you want to do is have more resp. than photo.s. this meant that the plant wont grow much in height but in roots and maturity
p ferts will help try a tranplant fert like 10-52-10 at 1/2 strangth
k so to control resp you can do about a hundred things but keepin mind that any change means you need to adapt you care methods
the eases way to do this is have a longer night that day
since perk uses c3 photos. you cannot control by temp so much ex. would be light ing 12/12 cooler in the day aqnd warm at night = reduced ps. and increased resp.
i would also imagin that like all cacti mucst be dormant to flower luckily the long night will help this but you will need to reduce your average temp for growing them probly to 10-15 degrees C for the entire 24 hours if u can
hmm perhaps a window sill where it is not draftly would sufice if its as cold where u are as it is here
hope this helps and i hope it makes sence if not pm me it may take a while 4 me to reply as my final examas are aproaching

To simplify Millenium's post, you will need to provide a dry, cold winter dormancy at just above freezing during which the plant will lose all of its leaves in order to have any chance at summer flowers. These conditions are inappropriate for grafting, but if you want to grow out this weedy, bushy, glochid-infested thing, be my guest.
