Police crack down on 'magic' mushrooms possession September 2, 2005 - abc.net.au
Police have charged 46 people and seized almost five kilograms of "magic" mushrooms during this season's crackdown in the forest near Balingup.
People travel to the area each year to collect psilocybe or magic mushrooms, which have a hallucinogenic effect when consumed.
Senior Constable Darryl Croucher says there has been no significant rise in the number of mushrooms seized, but more offenders have been caught with other drugs such as ecstasy, speed and LSD.
He says people are starting to get the message about the danger of magic mushrooms and the annual campaign against their collection is deterring potential offenders.
"However, you've got to remember that each year you have a new crop of people maturing and gaining licences and having bright ideas of coming down to the area, but I think the message that the likelihood of them getting caught and it costing them more than it was worth is starting to get through to them," he said.
