That's awesome news! Stamets always said that the buttons were useless medicinally and possibly even carcinogenic due to agaratine content. (Though I heard that agaratine does not affect humans adversely as it did the lab rats, negating his comments on that too...) I had always hoped that the most consumed mushroom would be helping those who ate them as well, and not be leading towards health problems for millions and a bad name in general for mushrooms...

This alone, the fact that no health related issues have arisen in the last forty years tied to these mushrooms, made it hard for me to correlate in first place. So this is awesome, I love the concept of mushrooms being a medicinal component of the diet. Mushrooms have proven themselves to be superior to other foods by the diverse array of biologically active compounds that they contain (polysaccharides like Lentinan and PSK, triterpenoids, sesterols, polyunsaturated fatty acids (yes, Omega 3, and 6's), etc, etc.).

40 times the antioxidants of wheat germ in shiitake and maitake?! Cool
I wonder how much is in oyster mushrooms? Probably comparable. I think pink oysters are great, grow your own food and medicine in under two weeks.
Thanks for that!
Light and Love,
JD

"40 times the antioxidants of wheat germ in shiitake and maitake?!"

No, 40 times as much of one particular antioxidant, ergothioneine. Since no comparison to other antioxidants with regard to amount and efficacy is given, this doesn't mean much for the consumer.

I think that it's just saying that Agaricus mushrooms are the best known source for this particular antioxidant. They can use these numbers to say anything, but if they are the best known source, cool. It'd be nice for mushrooms to have that brand equity with cancer prevention, or general well being, like carrots have for improving eyesight, or apples do for keeping the Dr. away!
Thanks for catching me on that, I forgot that there are probably many antioxidants in both the mushrooms and the wheat germ, and this was only referencing the erothioneine, and mis-spoke (mis -thought, and mis-typed!)

Mushroom sellers should take advantage of their products health benefits in their marketing strategy...

This may be easier to read:
