WBS contamination
    #4609721 - 09/01/05 08:21 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

several of my colonizing WBS jars have black dots at the top of the seeds. its obviously a contam, but id like to know whats the name for it and if i need to worry about it. it hasnt hindered the myc growth much at all, but it looks like it might be spreading. also, whats the usual cause for it?

thanks.

sunuva bitch. this is what it is:

Pin Molds ? Rhizopus spp.
A very fast growing fungus. Once it sporulates, it forms many tall aerial hyphae adorned with black-headed pins. It grows on readily available carbohydrates. Along with Aspergillus and Penicillium, species of this genus are the primary contaminants of grain spawn. It is also very common on straw.

oh my god i might have to toss these jars. ive been looking up on this mold and it causes some fucking sick infections to humans.

Rhizopus is the principal cause of zygomycosis, which occurs primarily in patients suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis (rhinocerebral disease), malnutrition, severe burns, or who are immunocompromised.

i dont fall into any of those categories, but still, i dont want to end up looking like this just cause i was wanting to trip
