Air circulation?. Very Small Fruiting Chamber.(With Pics)
    #4609270 - 09/01/05 06:35 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I have a 18 gallon rubbermade that Im using for my 4 cakes. 3 inches of perlite in bottom Pre soaked in a h202 solution. Cakes were not dunked or rolled, but will be after first flush. I heard that not enough air circulation would cause "balling". I was thinking about cutting holes in the side and stuffing with polyfil. Thats my question. How many holes and at what diameter?

Sorry bout the shitty pics (webcam)

cake at day 6

i have a fruiting chamber that is very much like yours. i open and fan it myself for FAE as many times as i can, which ends up being around 5-10 times throughout a day. so far i've gotten great results. i only have one cake though and i'm a newbie. i'm sure you'll get a better answer if you want to put holes in it.
good luck

Hy trip. I seen your last growth, great job gurl! I love your avi btw. Unfortunately, I am only able to fan it about three times a day because I work alot of OT. Does the cake look okay? Each day, the base just gets fatter and fatter, lol. It's either TC or B+ strain. I dropped my labeled lids in the birthing procees, and got em mixed up :frown:.

cut a small hole and put a air pump in the hole, connect the air pump to a Timer, have it set on 2 hr in AM, 2 hr PM,
would that work?

No need for all that in my case. Simple holes stuffed with polyfil will be all I need for this little chamber.I just wanted to know what size holes I needed. This isnt a new idea either. Ive seen alot of people adapt this method on different chambers. Thanks for your ideas and post though.

usually the idea is to have polyfil holes right above a casing, or just right near the cakes i would suppose, to better help the CO2 make its way out. i would suggest 2 holes on each side. as for diameter, 1+ inch should be fine. good luck.

hi..bro

I'd make some holes in the side and stuff them with polyfil...like they do in the Double Tub tek.

or...

you could set up a bubbler system.

1 aquarium air pump
1 length of air hose
1 air stone
and 1 drinking glass or small glass.

connect the air hose to the air pump and air stone.
put the air stone into the drinking glass with some water and a splash of h2o2...stick this in one corner of your fruiting chamber.

the bubbler system will give you better air exchange.

tc

the idea of holes is 1. let air in 2. let CO2 out...this i know you know.

Make 2 holes on 1 side as close to the perilite that you can afford...if you can get some pvc to put on the outside you wont take any space in your ter. but its an extra step. CO2 (again as you prolly know) is heavyier so it will seep out those holes. Then make one or two, if you like, holes up top on the other side for fresh air to come in. On mine i have a small hepa filter fan about 5 feet away giving just the slighted breeze towards the hole. I still fan every now and then but woah the holes help on my days i work. Remember you dont need to FAE that much till heavy knottin/primidora have formed, then you knock it out with FAE as much as possible. Coo?

laterz and good luck

if you have east access to a hole say you can cut some 80mm holes and glue pieces of heppa filter on the inside of them. or use poly fill whatever suits your needs. id actualy place on the long sides 1 or 2 holes up high and on the opisate side an equal number of holes just above the medium to provide quality circulation.

Fungus man, sorry it took me so long, I had to bolt for a bit.  But yeah, what roadkill said.  IME though, 3 times a day is plenty fanning.  Keep in mind I haven't seen a cake in years, but I sure don't rememer ever fanning much more than that.

Sorry I can't help you with exact size of holes, I think that's going to varry a good bit between each cultivator.

Also, I'd still fan even if you had the holes, just think of them as back up if you can't do it everytime.  GL
(oh and thanks for the link in the pm!

Well, your cake looks fine to me...I don't see any contamination, and the "bumps" are normal right b4 pinning occurs.

FAE is very important as well. Even thought it is a small terrarium, I would still go with a fistank pump. As far as how big the holes should be...I always make them a little wider than a fish tank hose's diameter.

You could add the fish tank pump, but also, what I found that helps, like roadkill said, is to put a few holes on the side of the terrarium. Make the holes closer to the bottom, could make them .5-1" in diameter. This will help to let out some C02.

Pinning may take a little bit longer because the cake wasn't dunked, just make sure you keep that cake moist by misting, and keep on the FAE and you should be fine. Other than that, I don't see any problems with your cake.

hey buddy, like they said, put the holes just above the casings and cakes, co2 is heavier than air so when they6 expel co2 it will fill the chamber, but one it gets to the hole the co2 will just "fall" out the holes
