One of the largest drug busts in the last twenty years [TN/NC]

40,000 Marijuana Plants Discovered
August 31, 2005 - fox61tv.com

Drug agents in Tennessee and North Carolina have made one of the largest drug busts in the last twenty years.
They discovered more than 40 thousand marijuana plants growing on private property. Polk and Cherokee County police say a combination of routine patrolling and tips from the public prompted this two month investigation.

Altogether, drug agents found 12 plots in Tennessee and a half dozen plots in North Carolina but those numbers are expected to climb.

To give you an idea of how massive this bust was, the plants ranged in size from 4 feet to eight feet long and some plots had more than 1000 plants growing. Police say EACH plant has a street sale value of 2,000 dollars. Do some quick math and you see this is a 10 million dollar marijuana bust. And drug enforcement officers say those numbers will climb in the next couple of days as they continue to uncover plots in remote areas.

All of the drugs were found on private property but police say there is no reason to think the property owners are involved or had any knowledge of what was going on.

From here, law enforcement agents will take the drugs to labs for analysis.

Drug agents say they haven't seen a bust like this in 20 years but this is just the tip of the iceberg. Officers from three law enforcement agencies will be working 'round the clock to transport the marijuana, find more plots, and gather evidence against suspects.

At this time, no arrests have been made. Law enforcement officers are asking people with any information about the drugs to contact Polk County or Cherokee County police.
