Mushroom that I've never seen before
    #4605854 - 08/31/05 11:11 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

I've studied a varying array of mushrooms growing here in Florida. Of course...but Ive never seen these ones.

A few weeks ago I finished laying down a mulch drive-way. I cant tell you what kind of mulch...because its that shitty free stuff that is basically a mix of scrap. But, it is a wood-based mulch.

Anywho...the other day I walked outside, early...maybe 7am. My eyes bugged out when I saw all the mushrooms growing in my drive-way. There must have been 60. I left them, never even got a chance to study them. When I got home...they were all gone. I figured someone else in the house had destroyed them.

The next day I forgot to check.

The day after that, I make it a point to go out and check real fast, at about 6:30 am, before I have to leave. I look at them a little, and bag some for study later.

Again, I come home at about...2 pm. Again, the mushrooms are gone! Upon studying the ground, I noticed that they had just shriveled up and died. Of course, this is understandable...its Florida...its August. Its hot as hell. I went and checked the ones I bagged (which I had left outside, but not in direct sunlight). The caps on the bagged ones were also shriveled, but the stems were not. The bag was also contained dark, almost black, water.

So, a summary... theyre growing in mulch, in Florida, in direct sunlight, seemingly after its been wet out (though its always wet in the morning here, damn humidity, but its also been raining at night).

Im afraid I did not get a good look at the gills...but I believe they were very dark, almost black (if not black). The top was also black. It seemed to be one solid color. Another thing that cought my attention, was that they were very, very thin. If memory serves correctly, I think I was almost able to see through the cap, thats how thin it was. The caps were anywhere from .75" to 1.5" in diamter.

The stem was smooth and white. If say maybe a 1/4th inch thick. They were also of a nice height, perhaps 8 inches.

They smelled...like cubensis, I believe. But, my sense of smell has never been one of my strong points.

I'd try to tell ya how they bruised...but...they were black, so a bruise wasnt too easy to notice.

I know this isnt a lot of information to go off of. But, so far I havent seen pics, posts, or anything that describes a shroom that resembles the caps on these ones. Very thin, and black.

Hopefully Ill be able to snap a few photos and maybe even get a spore print tomorrow, or the next day.

either coprinus or just overly dried shrooms.

True. It could possibly be a mica cap.

Ive been researching the Mica caps, or Coprinus micaceus. I seem to be finding pictures that look differently. One source will give me pics that look similar to my mushrooms...and another will give me pictures that in no way resemble them.

Edit: My original source for photos on micaceus seems to no longer hold water, as no other source shows photos anywhere similar to it. They do state that the mica cap may turn very dark when fully matured...but these things are black even as they are young. As I mention, they sprout up, as high as 6 inches, in 1 day. Then they die again within hours.

wow same with coprinus species, and what do you know they are called "inky caps" cause they turn to black goo. Also if u pinch them the pinched part turns to black goo. Infact a long time ago when ink was scarce, they used those mushrooms for ink.

and if it was really hot out like your stating, they wouldnt have the moisture really to turn to "goo", instead they might end up just drying black like your describing.

anyways, good luck on your next find.

I cant imagine it not having the moisture, though. The humidity high enough.

As for the bagged ones...the caps turned into a black-ish liquid, but it was of the consistency of water, not goo. But it sounds like the "self-digestion" that they go through.

Anywho, I got some pics. These are the state of the shrooms at 3:30am. I am going back out after I finish this post to take more, which will be about 4:30am.

kk, here is a pic for 5:00 am. Many more sprouted up...but they are all very similar to the 3:30 pics. Perhaps a centinmeter or so higher. Another pic at 6:00 or 6:30 should show their sudden sprout, and their black color.

Ya, I figured as much as soon as I saw the first sprouts at 3:30. That and when I read about the "self-digestion", which sounded similar to what mine were doing. I was just having trouble figuring out the species after that.

And, of course, this seals it.

the exact ID is coprinus lagopus - the wooly inky cap.

edibility: probably harmless, but also fleshless and flavorless.
