    #4605339 - 08/31/05 09:36 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

okay i just took what i thought to be a fully colonized corn jar and once i took the cake into a zipplock bag and broke it up there were still some corn kernels not covered in mycelium am i at a total loss? question 2.. for the casing layer i took a aluminum pan sprayed lysol and then wiped with rubbing alchol... then i took a 1/2 inch verm on the bottom of pan and then i sterilized my 50/60 verm/ coco coir casing in the microwave 5 minutes then another 5 then 50 seconds after stiring everytime.... what im worried about is i forgot to wet the 1/2 inch of verm in the aluminum pan.. did i mess up or what should i do? please help.. im still waiting for the casing to cool off but i put the mycelium corn on the verm already

if you can i would scoop the corn back up and leave it in the bag overnight to let the network stenghten again and then put it down, i have heard that the bottom should be wet, but i have also heard that when it is dry it absorbs any over watering so i dont think it matters that much. maybe someone with more exp. wil come by and clarify

Well, whatever you do, dont remove the substrate. That will just cause an even greater risk of contams. Just put it in Incubation again , let it colonize a day or 2 more, then case. Let it set in incubation somemore until you see myc poking thru the casing, and then put it in the FC. Check out hyphae's pinning strategy.

okay i put the casing over the mycelium corn and covered it with aluminum foil and will let it sit at 80 degrees for 4 days and then will check on growth does that sound good?

Do i have to keep it at 85 exactly or can i be between say 80-85 cause right now i have a thermometer on the middle of the aluminum foil its a fish tank thermometer and i have my bakers pan over a small rubbermaid with a fish tank heater in it with it set at 87 degrees now cause the fish tank therm only read 82 so i set the heater to 87 now and its climbing to 84 so i think i will keep it there
