Tips on rooting catci
    #4604854 - 08/31/05 06:19 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

In what ways can I trigger a cactus cutting to root? I got a T. pachanoi a couple months ago. I've tried hard but it still won't root.

I used rooting hormone.

The end was definetly callused over before I put it in a growing medium.

My growing mix had sand, bone meal, vermiculite, perlite, and a little bit of dirt. All in a shallow pot.

I watered it once lightly, over the course of maybe a month. Now that I am giving it bright light, the cactus sprouted new growth, a little pup. But still no roots! I knocked it over yesterday by accident. and didn't see any.

It must be using it's reserved water for the new growth. It seems strange to me.

Is it just a matter of time or do I need to further influence my cutting to root somehow?

Any ideas?

you may have just broken the roots off when it tipped over... I don't know if it would bud without a proper root system. I very new to the cacti too. One of mine just died, so I'm still kinda bummed

I can tell you how I do it, I let the cuttings heal over till they
turned a blackish gree, about 30 days, then I put them into a pot
with a couple inches of grow rocks in the bottom for good drainage,
then I just use maybe a 50-50 mixture of sand and potting soil, then
I put outside out of dirrect sun, and water a little, and in a couple of
weeks my pedros start putting off little buds, and the tops turn a bright green showing they are growing

Leave it alone, it will root when it needs water. Don't water it at all until it has roots. Root growth is a search for water not a response to water.

Once every two weeks give it a little pull upwards, this will tell you when the roots have developed.

Until then just relax. Cacti are tough as nails, it WILL root!

I had a cactus not root that I just left sitting on one of my desks. It must have sat out of the ground for about 8 months. I sprayed it with water about once a month and it continued to grow without roots or even being in the ground. I just recently repotted it, and its still growing, I don't know if its rooted yet, but its growing. Yours should be fine.

Lol, I've got a one and a half inch pedro pup that has lived without any roots for over a year now. Cacti are so tough that I know it will root one day.
I've had trichs for about two years now and I'm continualy amazed by their tenacity to live. I think the only way to kill them is either to drown them or burn them.............Or EAT THEM!!! Mwahahahhaha!

It is an old wives tale, that you should put rocks in the bottom for drainage. The soil should have equal drainability throughout all the soil.

pearlite in the mixture will certinly aid in drainage. however the gap of grow rocks at the bottom IS also a good idea as once the water hits the bottom it will drain quickly and not pool. also the additional medium will slightly wick water out of the soil mixture.

Its not even nessicary to gently pull up in search of roots....the ribs will get nice and fat once it starts to put out and roots.

But have patience, I had a pedro that took about 7 months to root.
