Need Help! I am ready to start!
    #4604770 - 08/31/05 06:04 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

I got my spore syringe today from Little guy, it took only three days and he threw in an extra syringe. I have been waiting more than two weeks from earth's tongue (they suck!)and they still haven't shipped it! Quick questions :
#1The PF-TeK for simple minds says if you don't have a pressure cooker then stem for 1 1/2 hr, but I have read about people use the microwave to do it. Has anyone had success or cont. from doing so?
#2 Having trouble finding place circa 86 degrees, I have a digital thermometer to monitor temp but 76 degrees is the warmest I got by closing AC vents to spare room and putting high in closet. (Like it cold in house) Any ideas from people with same prob. I thought about attic but worried about cont. and the heat varies through the day and night. ( I live in Florida )
#3 I watched a video were they used only two holes on the jars instead of four like everyone else uses. Has anyone done this? Is there much time difference?
- That's all I have for you as of yet but I am sure I will be updating as I go along. This is my first time growing so VERY excited!!!
I appreciate all of your thoughts and opinions!

I use 5 holes. To gain extra heat for incubation, wrap with blankets. And steaming is better than microwaving IMO.

I did two holes in my jars and they were slower at colonization verse 4 hole ones I have done

You said you have seen the mushroom video right? did you see the part when they put the jars over the re frig(if your able to do this)it works pretty well. My cabinet over the re frig stays at a constant 84 degrees

I did see that part of the video but for some reason the area above my frig isn't any warmer to the feel. At least that I can tell but I will measure it.

Hold a oral thermometer in your closed hand and you will see why you cant tell the few degree difference by hand. Your hand is alot hotter than the target your looking for.

Too many holes raises the water content of the jar. I stick with four holes and haven't had a problem. Then after i inoculate I put tape over the holes and put them in a cooler with a heating pad that stays on. I got the pad at walgreens for 20 bucks. I can keep the pad on low and it keeps the temp around 84-86 perfectly. I hope this helps.

Please explain to me how too many holes create MORE water. And WHY do you put tape over the holes? Do you have a breather tube? Or a polyfil stuffed hole? Or any other breathable filter?

if you microwave the jars, it might upset the moisture levels in them and cause your colonization to take longer or stop all together... better to steam IMO

for the higher temps try a TiT incubator.

the more inoculation points, the faster the jars will colonize... hence the 4 (or 5) holes and why you shoot the solution down the side of the glass and not straight down. and that is why you shake up grain jars... to have more inoculation points

my 2 cents... hope i helped and good luck

thanks the brink

I am going to have to microwave it. I know to clean the shit out of it before placing the jars in there, but how long? Also how long do I let it cool down before taking them out? Has using the microwave worked for anyone else?
