Pin Growing Down?
    #4603590 - 08/31/05 02:17 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Let's say that on a BRF cake there is a pin that is growing down, kind of along the cake. Changing the light source is not an option to get it to grow up. Should this be picked off soon, or could it start to grow upwards in a day or so?

They will usually go up if you are using pearlit to humidify with it may hit pearlit them start to turn up they hate that stuff.

Would it actually need come in contact with perlite before growing up, that would probably be too late if the cake is in a single-cake fruiting chamber (let's assume it is) given space constraints.

I have had them touch pearlite then go up some turn up just before they hit you never know I have had shrooms grow in a perfect circle coming off of cake before they are unpredictable just let it grow see what happens.

You could pick it, but why would it growing downward be a problem? You said you were using cakes. If it were growing downward in a casing tray, then you might have a problem. Once it hits the bottom of the FC or perlite, it will turn to grow where space allows it to anyway.

It seemed like a problem because I did not know that it would grow up if it hits something or even that it was ok for it to hit something. Thanks for the prompt replies.

I had a mushroom growing down on my casing , just picked it a few minutes ago. They don't seem to exibit any signs of phototropism as some would suggest , I have my light directly above the casings and it still decided to grow downwards. Their growth patterns seem to be governed by nothing but pure chaos.

The humidity looks too high in that pic that can cause stalks to get waterlogged and sag down...
With cakes they grow any direction they feel like at the moment.
