Dookie: The Final Frontier
    #4603489 - 08/31/05 01:39 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

Hi there,
I'm writing this because I finally am going to attempt a grow on horse dung. I got my clear plastic container (12 1/2" x 10 1/2" x 13"), my polyfill, 6 colonized PF cakes, tinfoil, casing mix, and 5 lbs. of straw/dung stubstrate. Now, I have the basic idea down, but I still have some questions. For example: Does one place any casing mix at the bottom of the container? After the substrate is colonized, one would periodically remove the cover for fanning, yes? Anything else I should know?

Also, I was looking for a good grow guide/log/tek that shows that tells you how to do a dung-based grow. I found a lot of stuff on the site, but nothing in the nature of a simple, specific "how-to" guide or tek. Anyone have a link?

Thanks

I like to place moist vermiculite at bottom of tray,
after substrate is colonized you want to case then incubate until you first see mycelium poking through then into the fruiting chamber where it is fanned.

Those are pretty basic guides there with pics.

Oh, you guys must have misunderstood me, I already have the dung prepared and ready to go. I know how to case. All I would like to see is instructions on precisely how use horse dung AFTER it is ready. But I think I can figure it out by myself...
THanks anyways though

Ok case the colonized poo put it in incubator until you see mycelium poking through then fruit it.

I don't use a bottom casing layer cause I don't want unseen contams having a chance to ruin my grow.

After the horse poo is fully colonized...you can fruit it or put a casing layer on.
If you use a casing layer...let the casing layer start to get colonized to the point where the mycelium is just starting to poke through the valleys of the casing layer.

you can read this...

You can mix vermiculite in with your poo prior to pasturization if you want it to hold more moisture, rather than running the risk associated with slapping casing on the bottom. You will like the poo! GL dude!

Thanks very much, you guys! One more question: I've read most people writing that they let colonization occur at 80 degrees, or even down to room temperature. Is this kosher? My chamber is too tall to fit into my incubator, (though I suppose I can jury-rig it). I also have a space heater that I can use if necessary--though I do have the advantage of a warm climate at this moment. (roughly 65-83 degrees inside--night-day)

So a temperature drop is not required if one adds a casing layer? One maintains the same temperature?

just colonize it at room temp...if its a large bulk grow.

I put mine outside over night to get the temperature to drop for fruiting.
