Messed up poo!?
    #4602308 - 08/31/05 04:30 AM (11 years, 5 months ago)

Hey I think I stuffed up the pasteurization process... basically it was in a pot on the stove top for about 1 hour 40 min. the average temp was 170 - 180. The problem is it did go above 180, about 185 for probably 5 mins. The water under the pillowcase even started boiling for a few seconds before I took it off the heat... Have I messed up the poo?

I didn't realize it was so critical to stay below 180, hope my tub doesn't get contamed.

That may be the smell you are referring to in your other post. :frown:

If it was boiling, then the water was at 212 degrees, not 185. I did the same thing you did a week ago. I had a really fat pillowcase full of poo that filled more than half of the pot I was cooking it in. I had my thermometer in the water and it read 175, so I let it sit for about an hour checking on the temp here and there. When I went to pull the pillowcase out, the water underneath began boiling and I thought "OH SHIT, THIS POO IS FUCKED!". I guess the heat on the bottom of the pot was higher than the top due to the poo acting as a barrier between the two. Well, I used the poo anyway and it seems to be working good. It is near 100% colonization. I used more spawn than usual, so I don't know if the myc beat out the contams or if there was just so much poo packed in the pillowcase that the core temp didn't get that high or if all that Lysol I sprayed prior to spawning really worked.

I say be extra sterile as a precaution and GL to ya!

Nice glad to know it should work... It seems to be colonizing but I'm not sure if it's just maybe the myc spreading out from the birdseed spawn... and not actually eating into the poo if that makes any sense...?
