OUTDOOR HELP
    #4597881 - 08/30/05 02:10 AM (18 years, 7 months ago)

So here is what's going on. i started a 2' by 3' bed. it is a raised bed enclosed with cinder blocks. i mixed and even amount of compost manure and worm castings and used a good amount of soaked straw. i used a soaker hose on the bottom of the bed after seeing Deva's bed. i put down about a 2 1/2" layer of straw/dung/castings and put a shallow but even layer of Tc spawn across 2/3 of the bed and a shallow but even layer of gt spawn on over the other 1/3. i then layered about 3 1/2" of straw/dung/castings on top of spawn followed by another shallow but even layer of Tc spawn on the same 2/3 of the bed as other Tc spawn and the same with the gt. finally i put about a 1- 1 1/2" layer of just dung/castings on top. my question is what do i need to put on top of the bed if anything? maybe vermiculite and if so how much. also should i cover the bed with a tarp or leave it open to the conditions. i am in Arkansas and the weather down here is simply put hot and humid. i used 3 mycobags as spawn. 2 Tc bags and 1 gt bag. thanks a million.

I case with chopped straw outside usually, because it dirt cheap and it works. You could use vermiculite but seems like a lot of trouble to me. Chopped straw has done very well for me, you just take off half of it to initiate pinning, or when you see pins. You don't even have to do that part but the extra fresh air exchange WILL help considerably.

Straw won't hold moisture like vermiculite. Why would it be too much trouble to use verm? Just throw some on top and wet it. Krnfan, why did you use 2 different strains? Keep that patch moist if it's dry outside and wait. It might take awhile, but it should pin.

Yeah, you shouldnt have used 2 different strains. Now they are gonna duke it out and waste:time, energy, and nutes. "In the end, there can be only one". LOL
