I read they only need 30 secs of light one time to know which way is up and that will be fine. With no light, they will grow in all directions. Although it is possible, don't deprive them of light, it will hurt your yields

I assumed by sunlight you meant any light source.

So your saying is all I have to do is hold a flashlight above them for a minute a day and they'll grow fine?

12/12 light cycle is needed to initiate pinning. then you can cut down on lighting as much as using a small watt bulb or indirect light.

tell that to the mushroom that several if us shroomerites found in a cave, although it's a busy cave attracting maybe 2-3 groups per day, it might have recieved about 2-3 minutes of light each day through it's entire cycle

mushrooms do not need light to start growing....they can grow in complete darkness, but you will usually see that affect the color and sometimes size of the fruits.
They need extremely little light to initiate pinning.
The 12/12 light cycle is used more to give the mushrooms directions to grow so you have strait mushrooms. The 12/12 light cycle also is the closest thing to being outside(natural environment). Some people even use a 1/23 cycle.
I personally use the 12/12 cycle because I like really strait growing shroomies. That, and my timer only has an on / off setting, so I dont really care how long it's on hehe. It is not necessary to have light for that long though.
So to answer your question, no, it technically is not necessary to have light.
You can get away with using indirect sunlight and be fine. The thing that has worked best for me are small fish tank lights, they have a good color spectrum.
Mushrooms do not need any light to start growing, but as far as cultivation is concerened, you want to use light so that you have tall, strait, nice, and colorful fruit bodies.
Hope that helps...GL TO YA!
