flushing

I have heard a mass of confusing techniques on flushing. Some say just pick the mushies off and wait others say soak the cake in water. I have picked a few and they seem to always take a bit of the cake with them. Does this matter? What is the best flushing method?

as for soaking in water [we call it 'dunking'], it works very well.
