Sprouting very small seeds
    #4598827 - 08/30/05 12:03 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

Anybody have any advice or experience doing this? The method should allow the sprouts to develop normally as plants (seedlings) for at least a week prior to harvesting (possibly requiring the ability to add nutrients - not sure). I know there are commercial units available for accomplishing this, but they're far too expensive.
One idea I had is to apply the DWC technique on immersed seeds. The agitated water should keep contaminations away and ensure oxygenation, but I suspect it might also tear away the roots from the developing seedlings.

Nope - edible sprouts (perhaps "seedlings" is more accurate, as they're allowed to photosynthesize and grow), as in alfala or broccoli sprouts, but with small seeds.

One day we'll have to sit down together over a cup of kava and you'll patiently explain to me how you get the idea that it's cacti sprouts that I want to eat. But until then, anybody knows?

I think I get what you are trying to do. I would try some sort of foam padding, a highly porous mat or something that you spread the seeds out on, then as their roots develop into the porous structure of the mat, they are secured. Perhaps put these mats on an ebb'n'flow table? What seeds are you trying to sprout?

The porous mat would have to be non-absorbent, I think. Perhaps spraying polystyrene foam unto a flat surface could do the trick? Problem is I can't expend money on this right now.

I don't have an ebb'n'flow system, but that sounds like a good idea. I'll try my DWC method for sprouting other (sturdier) seeds, though - could be a good method for effortlessly producing highly nutritious munchies.
