The vanishing mushrooms trick
    #4596602 - 08/29/05 08:49 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

So, there was a great day of Pan subb hunting recently. Very healthy, and large patches of them were to be found. I got about 30g from this area, and my friend got around 100g wet from this area.

Well, I decided to put mine to use that night, since there is gonna be plenty of rain here soon (and already was this morning) thanks to the remains of Katrina (sorry to all you that got the big hit from it). He, however, was just going to dry them. Both of us generally dry them by just putting them out on sheets of newspaper or printer paper and on a shelf or something. Today he came to find that almost ALL of them were eaten / rotted from maggots. Now that REALLY sucks IMO, so I would like to think of some ways to prevent this from now on.

First idea I had was to get a food dehydrator and use a bit of heat (maybe around 150 or so) and dry them out with that, hopefully killing everything in the process. This way, you can just blend them up or whatever. Eating the things isn't really a problem.

Second idea was similar, except just to use the oven on low heat with the door open or something. Would this work? Any other ideas that would work? Any hunting tips also to be able to tell if you're gonna have problems like this before you even put them in the bag? I guess that's not as important as a solution though.

Someone here told me to dry them under a hot lamp. The maggots will crawl out because of the heat and die under the hot lamp.

Havent tried this yet but its an idea.

Do not use heat, I don't know exactly what temp. is bad for mushrooms, but it can't be high.

The maggots will die if you fan dry, they need water to live.

I suggest you go to a large home improvement store and get some Dry-Z-Air, put it at the bottom of a bucket, make a rack about 5 inches above the desiccant, then cover the bucket, making it airtight.
This will pull all the moisture out of your pans leaving them cracker dry.

Ive noticed bugs being a big problem with subbs, much more so then with cubes. Maybe just because their smaller?

everything sweet leaf said is the exact answers to your problem. and yes that dry stuff is worth the money.

ive never really noticed a maggot problem with subbs, but ive never found an amanita muscaria that didnt have them.

I would place them on the back of a computer monitor or tv over the ventilation holes, they heat up a little but not too much and usually have good air circulation.
