Gotta love that blast of hormones, surging through the blood, eh?

I think people can often underestimate the actual force behind that hard-wired "fight or flight" response that we humans have. Dump enough adrenaline and other stress-hormones into your blood in one fell swopp...and I can bet almost anyone, no matter how tough, will revert to a language-deprived caveman being attacked by a lion :smirk:

Back in highschool for my Wildlife Management class we would rappell off of the football stadium. I was a boy scout when I was young so it was an experience I was used to. This activity was totally optional but some other people in the class who had never done a thing such as rappelling before decided to go. It's just so bizarre to watch another person go into fight or flight while you can observe them. As the unexperienced students started going whenever they got to that point where you have to lean back and just trust that the rope and harness will hold you I began to notice that peoples legs would involuntarily shake like crazy, their eyes would get huge as if it suddenly became a life or death situation, breathing got heavier, and as my teacher would try and talk them out of fight or flight (he was pretty good at that) they'd eventually gain some composure and complete the task.

I'm sure back in prehistoric times the increased strength and awareness that the adrenaline rushing through your blood provided was a major benefit to survival but it seems it also blocks critical thinking and reasoning skills. I guess we didn't have much use for those back then, though.

I think it's a degree of exposure - the more you are exposed to the fight-or-flight response, the more you maintain your bearings when it happens. Quite obviously some people can "use" the reaction to exceed their normal limits in some pretty dramatic ways. Some people grow to love the fight-or-flight response and turn into "adrenaline junkies". This is all a result of our relative safety in modern times (depending on area, of course). Most people in the western world are not put in life-threatening situations very often, so they never get a chance to become used to adrenaline.

In ancient times, humans would be exposed to life-threatening situations daily. For them the adrenaline surge worked to heighten their already considerable survival skills. They would be used to it from an early age.

However, when you transcend all this pre-conditioning by returning to the original wisdom of the animal body, then you discover this immense dimension of opportunity. For some people, it is a frightening risk. To me, that's the psychedelic experience."

Well folks, seems I am going to be OK, albeit sore for a few days. Thanks all for the concern.

In a somewhat similar accident a dozen years ago, a friend of mine got hit and one of his testicles was ruptured and swelled up to grapefruit size in minutes. We had to call an ambulance. He required major hospitalization, and later the testicle had to be removed.

Once again though, the real point of this thread was the mind-split that occurred shortly after impact. There was the frightened, wounded animal-body without  thought or reason and the disimpassioned observer going, "Yup, you took a a good one, let's see how you react." The Witness was a guy in a white lab coat and black-framed glasses taking field notes, "Note how Swami is both weak and strong at the same time and nearly oblivious to his surroundings. Hmmm, there are several stages of injury, denial, shock, acceptance..."

For a short time, I was planted quite firmly in the NOW. There was no silly thoughts like, "Boy am I being a baby and will be embarassed later when I recover."

For anyone wanting a similar Zen moment, I will be renting a ball machine next month. Sign-up early as I expect a good turn out.

Well, I don't know much about racquetball, but I do know you're supposed to wear eyegoggles, in case you get one of those 130mph balls in your face... So I'd think the same security would be extended for our precious jewels as well. Well, maybe you've started the next trend, Swami. You probably saved many men from some ballistical pain down the line, after that event.

Get swell, Swami.

Ever heard of Karma?

All injuries are the result of Karma?

How can this theory be tested? If I go nuts and spray the local mall shoppers with bullets, it is because they deserved it?

Do you truly believe this or merely taking a swipe in meaness?

if someone does not deserve something then are you saying they deserve something else?

if they deserve something else why does the person spraying bullets not deserve to be able to do so. if he doesn't deserve that, than we must stop him from doing that, because we are cable of it and deserve it.

all things are possible.

The idea that anyone "deserves" their experience is total BS, IMO.

We are all here having a life, that's all there is to it.  We have some choices about how it goes, but SHIT HAPPENS.

And Swami certainly didn't deserve to be injured...after all, he's Snugglicious!

Swami are you scared of going back to the mind-split?

Do you think we should not be able to have them as an evolving creature or should we still have them, are they beneficial?

I just about pissed myself!

I'm very sympathetic to your situation, Swam!

You just flooded me with memories of when I was younger..

I used to throw around the o'l hard ball with my sister quite often.

I never really held back on the intensity of my throws and with such lessons, my sister began throwing "guy style".

This one day, we're on the street in front of the house, and suddenly, my sister yells...  "CAR!"

So I look behind...  A natural reaction  IMHO.

For some reason...  I still don't know why, but, she had LAUNCHED the ball in my direction as I looked away.

I turn around to face her again only to have my nuts get acquained, in a very unfortunate manner, with the unleashed flying object  ( UFO  ) jetting into my immediate personnal space.

Those pictures made me laugh so hard cause that's pretty much how it felt...

It was a pretty sickening sensation, to say the least.

I just got chills thinking about it again.

Hey...

Not to derail this thread intentionally, but you sparked something when you mentionned "The Whitness".

The concept, although foreign as to the exact term you used, sounds like something familiar.

I actually can't get my mind off it now.

I wouldn't say that it is as a question of deserving but you can only reap what you sow. Or does it happen, that when you sow an apple seed in the fertile soil of the present, at time of harvest you get oranges instead of apples? I wouldn't say it's a matter of deserving because an apple seed can only bear an apple tree.
