Magash, srgtm1a,roadkill, anybody HELP!!! Water Boiling as we speak
    #4595995 - 08/29/05 08:08 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

I have no tyvek, or polyfil, and I am about to steam sterilize some pints of WBS. Can I use a top layer of vermiculite as a filter as you do with cakes?

it might work, but it's not ideal. Verm doesn't act as a moisture barrier like Tyvek does, it actually absorbs water. You won't be able to shake part way through colonization with the top filled with verm. You're better off running out to the post office or nearest FedEx box and seeing if you can grab some envelopes after closing time. Otherwise OfficeMax/OfficeDepot sells them as well, but kinda pricey.

steam sterilization most probably wont work. Wild Bird Seed (and other grains i presume) contains endospores, which are micro-organisms (contams ) that have coated themselves with a hard outer shell in order to protect themselves from high deperature, dehydration, and other stuff that would normally kill it.

The reason you soak and/or simmer your grains is to cause these endospores to germinate and produce bacterial colonies, so you can effectively eradicate them through high temperature and pressure, which allows the saturated, yet ungerminated endospore's tough outer coating to be penetrated.

Also, grains typically need a lot more air exchange than cakes do, so you need some air exchange or your jars will stop growing. just 4 holes in the lid wont cut it.

my advice is to acquire a pressure cooker (check e-bay) and a bottom rack cheap poly-stuffed pillow. i got one at big lots for 2.99 i have enough polyfill to do thousands and thousands of jars

I found a tek that Im gonna try that involves Boiling them 20 minutes a day for 2 days, and then 60 minutes, on the 3rd. I soaked for 24 hours and did a continual rinse for like 10 minutes.

Cut open a pillow. Most of the newer/cheaper ones have polyfill in them.

Okay, how would I apply that to my jars?

oh, totally missed the steam sterilization... don't waste the spores. You're failure rate might be bad if you're strapped for cash.

Your jars should have holes drilled in the top for the polyfill to be stuffed into.

How big? They have holes right now, but only a little bigger than a pencil lead.

dude sereously... if you arent worried about wasting spores, you'll waste WBS and you'll waste. TIME!  you need pressure cooker to do grains. stick to BRF for now until you can get one. and just spawn it to horse poo. it will work just as good, just slower colonization. trust me. its easy as hell.

Well, I don't have any experience with WBS....I've never used it...heard too many problems with contams so I always stayed away from it.

I'm sure a dry layer of verm is better than not having anything, but I don't know how well that would work out for you in the end. And like another user said, you won't be able to shake your jars with it filled full.

I think WBS is something that would definitely have to be PCed....steam sterilizing is not going to be sufficient in killing off all the bad guys (and there are a lot of bad guys).

IMO you are setting yourself up for contams.

If you are really persistent and don't care about wasting your spores, then you could at least tape the holes on the top of the jar while you are "steaming" them to prevent extra moisture from entering, but don't use the verm layer so you can shake the jars while colonizing. Tape the holes, steam them, then take the tape off and inoculate when the jars are cool.

I can't really give you better advice than that....steam sterilizing is ok for PF cakes, but really not sufficient for grains or WBS.

who knows though, you may get lucky, but I doubt it.

You cant do grains without a pressure cooker, just do a shitload of pF 1/2 pinters till you get a PC
