My new peyote seedling grafts **Update** New Pics
    #4595392 - 08/29/05 02:48 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

Here are some grafts I did about a week ago

Peyote grafted on Opuntia Compressa:

Peyote seedling grafted to Myrtillocactus areole:

I'll give updates when they start growing. Hopefully they will live, they seem to be doing fine(no shriveling), and I've taken them out of their humidity chamber. Hope you enjoy!

I was thinking the same thing before I saw this post.

It would look great.

My pereskiopsis is growing so slow so i opted to graft on opuntia and myrtillocactus. One question though: When I took them out of their humidity dome, should I acclimate them to their non-humid environment slowly or all at once?

When you acclimate any living thing, plant, or animal slow gradual change is less stressful than immediate. Even if the conditions the plant was in almost killed it, changing its environment fast could shock it and finish it off.

Thanks Psychoslut for your advice, that makes alot of sense. so I'll keep adding an hour of non-humidity each day to acclimate them. Hopefully that should acclimize them to a non-humid environment.

Faslimy, It's basically just experimentation. I'm going to be using many different stocks to do seedling grafting, like pereskiopsis, hylocereus, columnar opuntia's(cholla)etc... , just to see the different results I get on each stocks. Also I plan to do alot of seedling grafting onto areoles just to see what results I get, and the rates of success with this technique.

Thank you all for your comments.

Hey JB201 - do you have any updates on the success of these grafts? I am especially interested in the Myrtillocactus graft. Very nice, I hope it worked out.

It's a damn good idea. I've seen it done before btw, apparently it has a much longer sustained growth than pereskiopsis with more natural looking scions. In fact I was planning to do this exact same thing.... I'll have to stay updated! Very cool post, best I've seen in a while.

The Opuntia grafts have failed, but the areole graft(on Myrtillocactus)is doing fine. The seedling is still pretty tiny, but it has grown many new areoles. It doesn't seem to grow as fast as the pereskiopsis grafts I have seen, but I'm satisfied none the less.

I'll try to remember to get some pictures up tomorrow.

Thanks for your nice comments.

all that exposed surface area on the oportunia makes
me feel like it would contract and shrink as it callouses
too much for the graft's bond to keep.

what's your prognosis for the failure?
