cubensis?
    #4595959 - 08/29/05 07:56 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I found these growing wild. I am pretty sure they are cubes, but I am new to mycology. Most were already blueing when harvested, but it intensified very quickly, before my eyes. I have looked at a lot of info about cubes and other mushrooms, I just want to be sure. The gills were almost a purple color on the older specimens, which were almost gone by, and a definite blueing of the margin. The gills of the younger ones were a brownish grey color. The stems are hollow.

never hunted before or done any ID, but those look like cubes to me... definitely wait for an experienced mycologist before munching.

here are some steps that will increase the chances of you getting an answer.
take a sort print
describe the habitat
post some better pictures. try to photo the length of a whole mushroom close up and some shots from different angles including a gill shot. pics of clumps of dirtty mushrooms aren't all too helpful.

Here are some more pictures. The mushrooms grow at the bottom of humps of decomposing Sitka spruce trees covered in moss and many other short plants amidst living spruce. It is a very airy substrate.

i dont think they are either... cubes usually grow off cow poop and the gils are usually grey/purple/brown (yours look rusty) and they have a veil which is usually purple with spores and they bruise blue. The first picture of yours resembles them because i almost see some bluing but you will have to take a spore print before we know what they are: to do this take a mushroom cap and place it gills down on a sheet of white or black paper and place a bowl or cup over it. Let it sit overnight or something and the colour that is left on the paper is ur spore colour. If the colour is dark brown/purple then you have cubes. Also one thing your mushrooms seem to be lacking is the nipple at the top of the cap, and they seem a bit orange to be cubes, but this may just be the strain and/or my lack of knowledge of cubensis hunting, seing as how i have 0 experience with them.

Those are Cortinarius. The last 2 photos clearly show the collapsed cortina and rusty brown spores on the stem. The strongly reddish gills in the 4th photo suggest they are from subgenus Dermocybe and related to C. semisanguineus.

They are not active and possibly poisonous.

The Dermocybes are widely used for dyeing fabrics.

Happy mushrooming!
