so that little metal thing on the fan just spins at the fan's speed and that whips the spring around enough to create that whirlpool effect?

Thats cool, I'm amazed that it still spins with them 2 hard drive magnets so close to the magnetic field of the fan, thats some pretty wild MacGyverin.

Looks good. That spring may start to rust. You can put steel rod in plastic tube and seal the ends or cover the whole rod in silicon. Easier than getting another potentiometer is to use a lower power supply, everybody has old camera chargers about, look for a lower voltage one.

Yah, bumper...good eyes calling out the harddrive magnets. Im pretty amazed that the fan spins too with those mags on it...but hey..it works...and as for the spring rusting, yeah..was planning on doing that, agar taught me that neat "make your own stir bar" trick, that was just for "testing" purposes. I know i can just use another power supply, but, i figure if i make it totally adjustable, i wont have to switch out power supplys for different wieght stir bars and what not. Besides, pots are only a few bucks at ratshack!

Im gonna make one soon out of a blender. I figure you could control speed and all without having to buy any extras. Just bend the blades flat and add magnets and drop it inside the base. Configure a external stand, and voila!

FungusMan, id suggest using a computer fan instead of a blender...Blenders norm spin REALLY fast and the speed control wont really be there (and they are really loud!)...You really need that speed control, because if it is too fast your stir bar will just sit in the LC and jitter, but not stir! my whole project cost me like $3...i had the fan, magnets, and cd spindle top. All i had to buy was the potonometer. Really basic though!

Blending and high speed rotation will fragment the myc too much.

A short spurt in a blender, or a few minutes of high speed rotation on a stir plate has not done any damage to mine. I agree, if you blended it excessively, you could do some damage.

would it be possable to rig a dimmer knob to the blender and controll the speed like that?

I can see it having a few uses, especially braking up your mycelial culture jars.
