Sickly cactus
    #4595780 - 08/29/05 07:04 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

I have a San Pedro cactus that has been growing fine for 10 months. Grew about a foot from an 18" cutting. Everything was fine until I got home from my vacation last week. The bottom half of the cactus is turning purple/black and getting squishy. The top is still green and looks to be growing fine.

I don't know what to do with it, 2 1/2 feet tall and messed up. Should I chop the top, dry it and restart it as a cutting to salvage something? Can I eat the dark part or is it rotting? Any advice would be extremely appreciated....

Too much water I think. My advice is to do as you said and cut off above the rot and root it...maybe the bottom half will dry out and start to pup. Maybe you should wait until someone mroe experienced with rot than myself gives some advice.

Thanks so much, I wasn't sure if this would get answered.

do I need to dry the top before rooting it? Maybe cut above and below the rot. Plant the top and see what happens with the bottom.

chop the top, let it callous, then plant it.

eat the bottom part that is green/normal?  It doesn't look bad, just discolored and squishy.  Cut that part out?  Chem_Bliss helped alot and got +5, I have no experience with ethnos and was looking forward to growing a decent cactus.  I hadn't planned on eating it any time soon, I just don't want to throw it in the trash.  Freeze it and save for "later"?  Help again!

Yeah cut the top sectiom off. Look at the cross cut and see where the vascular tissue is. If it is dark then cut off more till the vascular tissue is as green as the normal tissue.

well, my poor cactus bit the big one today.  Came home from work and it was broken in half from the dark, rotting area.  I cut the clean top off, the bottom was mush and got thrown in the trash... SAD  :frown:

Slight update after messaging with very helpful shroomite (Chemical_Bliss)

I cut the top, about 6 inches...  looks decent.  I didn't know about needing darkness for a callous, so I'll stick it in a cabinet.

edit: info not appropriate for this thread

I was so happy with my cactus doubling in size in less than a year.  Sad sad sad  :frown:  You might have been right about over watering.  I didn't water much, my other "non-special" cacti are fine on the same water schedule, but the very bottom of the stalk and roots were mushified when it broke off this afternoon.  And definitely smelled a little ripe.

I might just save some money up and buy a couple cuttings from a vendor.  Just bought an IBM Thinkpad so the funds are kinda low
