Anyone know what these are?
    #459472 - 11/15/01 03:34 PM (23 years, 2 months ago)

These were growing in tons of small clusters on a mulched/garden area on Vashon Is. in the Puget Sound. The mushrooms on the left are older than the ones on the right. The younger ones had no obvious bluing but the older ones did have bruising that sort of had a bluish tint. There was a definite slime layer that could be peeled off the cap in one piece. I took a spore print but its hard to really pinpoint a color, sort of a rusty brown. Thanks for any help

I would say good find but... eh.. spore print really freaks me out, rusty is never good. Galenerias have rusty to orangeish spore prints :\

I'd wait up on some other opinions.

Peace,

Well I wouldn't say the sporeprint was absolutely a rusty color, it was hard to make a conclusion. If you want another interpretation a violet brownish-brick color would also do.
Maybe that changes something

I've never found ps. pelliculosa before, but if I found what you've got I'd think I had. Make sure of that sporeprint.

They appear tp be Psilocybe silvatica, possibly pelliculosa, hard to tell for sure. I am fairly sure they aren't Ps. semilanceata though.

Personally, I don't think they're psilocybes, but if they are, as LK said they look most like Ps. silvatica or pelliculosa (neither of which are supposed to be especially potent). I've never seen a psilocybe drop spores that could be confused for rusty brown. Are the caps strongly hygrophanous in drying? And Azurepower, not to be a dick, but I think you need to do some reading before you try to help people with ID's, those are surely not semilanceata nor were the agarics in the other thread destroying angels.

Good Hunting!!

they're libs.the ones on the left are just old and rotting.libs come in some many various shapes and sizes.they all dont look like they do in the books.not all are perfect bell shaped and some times they dont have a nipple.sometimes theyre big, sometimes small. but they always have the psilocybe features. the pellicles always theyre, they range from dark brown to sometimes a light baisge( like on the right,i like those ones best) ,the spore prints always purple brown ,blueing sometimes occurs, always hygrophanous.

i cant see the spore print color so i cant put in an opinion on that.on my screen it looks black and white.

Has anyone ever found semilanceata in a mulched/garden area? I thought they grew pretty much exclusively in pastures, that's why I figured they couldn't be semi's.

They certainly look like pelliculosa to me. Check out the purplish brown blotch on the 4th from the left of the old mushrooms. That appears to be a spore deposit from a mushroom that was growing above it. The color looks right for a Psilocybe. That habitat is also a clue, pointing away from semilanceata. If there is any bluing it should be right at the base. In my experience you can't batter a pell enough to make it blue anywhere else. The seperable pellicle is a good feature and diagnostic for "pellic"ulosa.

I wouldn't call those Lib's. Pelliculosa sounds like a good shot especially since you found the removable pellicule?

Pelliculosa.Or silvatica. That's what they look like.If LK thinks that's what they are, then they probably are.If Workman thinks that's what they are then, well, your chances are even greater that they are pell's or silv's.These two guys know their shit.
I've never really known for sure how to tell these two closely related species apart.Stamet's says the overall color is different, but from the pics I've seen of each,I can't tell 'em apart.
