Traffic stop yields a ton of marijuana August 28, 2005 - theeagle.com
JACKSON, Miss. - Two Jackson men were being held in a Texas jail this weekend on $350,000 bonds after authorities purportedly caught them riding in a tractor-trailer headed to Mississippi with more than 2,600 pounds of marijuana and 20 kilograms of cocaine.
Smith County Sheriff J.B. Smith said Melton McMorris, 56, and Victor Thomas, 38, were stopped for traffic violations about 21:45 p.m. Thursday on Interstate 20 East about eight miles north of Tyler.
Smith said a deputy was suspicious of the truck because it was driving "exceptionally slow."
"When he pulled in behind them, they ran off the road," Smith said.
He said the arresting deputy noticed a strong smell of marijuana when he approached the truck, and a drug dog with the deputy also reacted to the odor.
"The drugs were found wrapped in several bundles in a false compartment in the front of the trailer," Smith said, adding that the trailer had no other cargo.
The bundles were covered in detergent in an attempt to mask their odor, he said.
