does a tree falling in the woods make a sound if no one hears it?

Of course it does! The tree still makes the same interaction with the environment that causes the sound, regardless if someone is around to hear it or not

Can you prove that the laws of physics still apply when not observed?

Rather, can you DISPROVE that the interaction between tree and ground has not changed for having been observed?

:smirk:

can you observe the laws of physics without interacting with them??

Hehe.  Read up on Schrodinger's Cat, it's one of my favorite theoretical problems.

The basics are- place a cat in an opaque container with a device that has a 50/50 chance of activating and killing the cat.  The cat is alive when going into the box, however, since the cat cannot be observed when inside the box, it is considered both alive and dead, since neither state of being can be confirmed or denied.  Granted, the cat could be in a state of suspended animation or dissapear entirely, but as those are unusual states of being for living creatures, they are dismissed.  The point is, until the box is opened at the cat is observed, it could be either alive or dead.  It isn't until it is observed that a state of being is confirmed.

As with the proverbial tree- if it falls in the forest and noone is there to see or hear it, it is impossible to know for certain what events lead to its arrival on the floor, and what the result of that arrival was.  It is only when we see the fallen tree, and infer that two things impacting create a noise, that we can assume what happened based on prior experiences.

I'm sure that's way more than you wanted to read- you can blame my housemate who's majoring in Spirituality and Philosophy.

How technical do you want to get? The short answer is no- thus observing ANYTHING causes a qualitative change.

see, I knew the cat story... Only there doesn't need to be a device. Nothing needs to actually kill the cat. Time is the independent variable, life/existence/state of matter is the dependent variable. It's alive or dead, inside or disappeared. The chances aren't necessarily equal for each possibility and that's what Schrodinger said. There is just some chance of all those outcomes and we have no way of observing it.

Please see:

http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,,sid9_gci341236,00.html

and

http://www.mtnmath.com/cat.html

The device IS necessary, and was part of the original problem. Without it, the same problem is present- place a living cat into a box, without being able to observe it, its state is unknown. However, placing a cat into a box does not result in death, therefore there is no logical reason to infer that the cat might be dead, other than the fact that the state of the cat is unknown until it is observed. If a device is implemented that creates an equal chance of life or death in the cat, the cat must be assumed to be both until it is observed.
