Casings and cold shocking???
    #4592683 - 08/28/05 11:28 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

Is it necessary to cold shock to induce the shrooms to grow or if I just leave them be, spray/fan them, and patch will they be fine?

Also, how necessary is it for there to be perlite with the casings for the RH?

Cold shocking (IMHO - at least for bulk substrates) is way OVERRATED.

LOTS OF FRESH AIR EXCHANGE & 12/12 LIGHT EXPOSURE - has always done it for me.

for rh, it depends on what you are doing to create it... perlite is not absolutely nessessary if you have other means to create humidity.

im a newb, but im pretty sure i heard a pro on this site say that myc does not need or want a "cold shock". i think people got this idea from the dunk tek.

directions for the tek suggest placing the container in your refrigerator during the dunk...but this is only to keep the cakes fresh, from what i understand. i think some people got confused with the purpose of this procedure and the function of it.

the purpose is to replace any h2o lost during colonization. the function is to place the dunk container in the fridge. fridge = cold...see where im goin with this?

obviously you need to drop your temp from the 80's during col. to the early/mid 70's (among other things) to induce fruiting, but that can be accomplished almost automatically when u take yer jars out of the incubator...right?

pros, please correct me if i'm wrong. i'd hate to give wrong information.

No it is mentioned in TMC. It says certain species will do better if cold shocked (I think some edibles actually require to be cold shocked or they will not fruit at all). I think TMC mentions it is not necessary for cubensis.
Cakes are cold dunked to reduce contams.

A drop in substrate temps from from 84-86F. during incubation to 74-77F. during fruiting is also a trigger, one of four, ie; Temp drop, light, fresh air (drop in co2 levels) and full colonization (the survival trigger). IME it may not be a significant trigger but when combined with all other triggers at the exact same time optimizes your pinning triggers effect on pin count. It isn't really considered a cold shock but temp drop is very useful IMHO.
