Oyster find
    #4592105 - 08/28/05 09:22 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

I was very excited to unexpectedly find these mushrooms out of season.

Location,

Here is a partially burned log under the bridge that goes over the river. And a drunken bank line I put up to try and catch a catfish. I didn't have the coordination to set up a real bank bank pole.

Closer

This was the only ones that was worth eating, because the rest were full of sand and i couldn't spare the drinking water to clean them.

That first pic is a beauty! I love the way fog looks on a cool, still morning. Nice find.

hahaha very funny. Budweiser feels like a ton of bricks in my stomach, from the carbs i guess. I can drink bud light, get just as drunk, and not get lazy.

Very nice!

We get early oysters in June and cold weather oysters in Fall over here.

How did you prepare them?

I sprayed them with I cant believe its not butter spray, then wrapped them 3x in heavy duty aluminum foil. I cooked them by setting my foil wrap on a log in a camp fire for about 3 mins.

What type is this oyster i have found? I cut out a mycel sample from the log, put it in a zip lock and put it on ice in a cooler.

Looks like Pleurotus ostreatus to me.

Your in Canada aren't you? I don't know what the climates like where you are atm but if your planning on cloning that mycelium to cultivate at home you might run into problems.

Warm weather Pleurotus are a lot easier to fruit indoors.

If these are a cold weather type of oyster, this particular strain sure does like the heat. Its hot as hell in the day, then has a drastic drop in temp at night, probably why these fruited do you think?

Hard to say really with that fluctuation in temperature...

I've cloned and tried to cultivate oysters that I'd found in Sherwood Forest in late September and found they just wouldn't fruit indoors but I didn't have any problems fruiting oysters from the same location that I'd collected in mid June.

I'd give it a shot though. If it gets hot as hell in the day like you say I'd be inclined to think they're warm weather oysters.

That's pretty sweet. I went into a poplar forest today and came out with 8lbs or so of beautiful oysters. I'm in S.Ontario. thumbs up for early oysters.
