read teks, still have casing question
    #4591541 - 08/28/05 06:27 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

i have read pratically every casing tek on this site and others, and i'm usure on 2 things...and hope someone could clear them up for me

1. some teks i have read say to sterilize the casing mix and some dont mention it.  should i sterelize? and if so, microwave? or like pc it in jars?  i am using the pf tek and casing with vermiculite.

2. can i use a clear container to case in?  i have a 8x3" (give or take) clear tupperware container i plan to experiment with first.
i know mushys need light to tell them which way is up...and i am wondering if usin a clear container to case in, even tho my terrarium has only one light source on top, is ok?  or will the pins try to grow from the sides under the casing layer.

BTW - if i missed the answers to my questions somewhere in the tek sections, a link would be great, and i apologize now for asking dumb questions to the pros.

i'm a newb, thanx for your time

1. pc would be more fail proof, but nuking it works too
2. i'd use a container that light cannot get to the sides of the substrate.. clear works fine if you put foil around the sides so light only gets to the top of the casing.

welcome to the shroomery bro

al, why would you pasturize the casing layer instead of sterilizing it? is there nutes there that can be destroyed?

I sterilize all my casing mix, no problem.

al, gettin ruffed up every once and a while is good for a persons character. thanx

is usin a 60/40 or 50/50 better than using straight vermiculite? is there any advantage?

how long do i microwave? like 15 mins?

brink - i thought there were no nutes in a casing mix...thats why cultivators use vermiculite and such...

thanx for all tha help, this board is great.
will be sure to post pix

My favorite is a 60/40 coir verm mix, dont use straight verm because it gets stuck to your fruits really badly and just a mess to work with
i just double saran wrap the container and zap it for 5 minutes, the Tek says to do 2 5 minute sessions so do it that way...Personally i dont think anything could survive a 5 min zapping but my microwave is a very powerfull one
Good luck

15 min will prolly catch that shit on fire... try 5 if it needs more let it cool a bit then nuke again...

>brink - i thought there were no nutes in a casing mix...thats why cultivators use vermiculite and such...

i was trying to clarify why al would pasturize the casing instead of sterilizing it... but he was talking about the poo.. i thought maybe he was doin something that i didn't know aobut... yes the casing layer is supposed to have no nutes or anything
