Yes. I almost ordered a kit once but never got around to it. Mostly interested in lager-a-likes and IPAs.

I've been homebrewing for almost 2 years. I've won a couple ribbons at homebrew competitions. I'm also a brewer at a brewpub in town. Also check out the all grain and extract with specialty grain homebrewing links in my sig.

I have two brews under my belt. I have been a mushroom grower for years, but my gf's mom bought me a beer kit for Christmas. I brewed the IPA that came with it. I added ginger to it and aged it til summer. It was very bright and clean, almost no hoppiness at all. Second was a porter that was quickly drank in the remainder of winter. The porter was not a kit, I followed a recipe with specialty grains. I havent brewed anything for several months, just because of lazyness. I bought a Hefeweizen kit the other day. I am going to try to make a rendition of Cherry Wheat. The Sam Adams beer is an American Wheat, and I am using specialty german hefeweizen yeast. It should be interesting. Definately going to let this one age awhile in the bottle.

After that, I think I am ready for some high gravity ales. I could be tempted to make a barley wine but I think first up is a Belgian Trippel. I actually think that I am going to brew a lot of Belg Trippel and throw a party.

I built a bar afew weeks ago and I'm saving up for a draft system. My hope is that I can have four beers on tap at any given moment.

Im going to get a kit today..

I ruined my last one with paint projects and crap so its time..

Ill brew tonight and post some pics.

Ive been brewing for years but only once or twice a year..

Im known for my rasberry "Bud Beer". Just use the water density method of hash making and put the goodies into home made tea bags and steep for a week in the fermented wort. Prime and youve got beer with a kick.. Havnt done that for a long time due to lack of buds.

Just found a nice place on Ventura Blvd. Ill go in about an hour.

Has anyone tried to age a lagar in green glass? Can you get a heineken-like flavor?

whats the heineken-like flavor? Its probably skunking. Green and clear bottles don't provide as much protection from light as brown bottles do. As long as the beer is kept cool(at least 50F-55F) and in a very dark place, there's nothing to worry about. As for it sitting in a hot distribution warehouse and sitting in glass cases in front of flurorescent light at the beer/liquor store all day, that's another problem.

I thought skunking was a desired flavor in some cases and why some beer is not kept in brown bottles.

Is the skunk flavor of Heini a result of bottling and conditions or is it the recipe?

Now Im confused.

Anyway.. Tomorrow I start brewing...

PS. Everything pictured in my post above cost just $150. It includes a 4 piece stainless steel stock piece set that was $50. Everything else with book and pre measured beer recipe and a few extras not found in some online kits was $100.

Soooooo if youve already got a big pot you can brew 5 gallons for just a Bill... After that its just tooo cheep to pass up the opportunity to brew beer.

I dont taste skunking in  heineken, thats my favorite brand. To me
a real skunk beer is either moosehead,  or St paulies girl,
but I,ll drink everything

well, its becoming so prevalent that some people think that it is desirable for heinekens, but I can't stand it, its disgusting. I've heard that some beers are purposely skunked, but I steer away from the macropiss.

Looking at your pictures....I'm going to need to take pictures of my setup.

It is partly recipe but most of the flavor you know as "heineken" comes from the bottling conditions.

heh, I love the skunky beers like St. paulys girl, heineken, and moosehead... I think they all have that flavor with a "bite" to em. I think there is no doubt the color of the glass is what imparts this taste to these beers. I just love a lot of flavor in general but, funny enough, I don't like dark beers. I guess I just like the lighter beers with a lot of flavor.

Please do... I loved your all grain thread and your pics are top notch....

Want to share a good recipe? I like darker beers and now that Ive found a GREAT place for all my needs Im going to experiment.

My newest is a Raucous Red. Everything at this place is fresh and made on site. They then box it up and sell everything pre measured for $19.99

They will also measure a recipe on the spot given what you say you want..

Its a cool place.. They sell cheese making supplies too.. Im going to get the Motzerella kit and make pizza some day.

Its the hops that cause the skunkiness. The isomerized alpha-acids can break down when exposed to light. There are a few beers that don't have hops in it, but its mainly old traditional recipes.

As for my recipes, I'm still just experimenting myself. I get a lot of my recipes from Brew Your Own and Zymurgy magazine. I suggest you subscribe to it if you are really hardcore into brewing.

So this is some of my brew equipment. I have 3 more soda kegs that are full of beer and are in a cooler. Also there's 2 more 6.5 gallon glass carboys that I'm cleaning at the moment. Also in the process of trying to get about 8 more soda kegs.

Here's some of my other equipment, including ingredients. I forgot to pull out the yeast, but I have about 8 vials in the fridge right now.

Here's some wine in secondary fermentation, its a pinot noir.

the black box is a chardonnay kit, and the rest of the containers are 6 gallons of Belgian Strong Golden(8.22% ABV), 5 gallons of Belgian Wit(4.75% ABV), 5 gallons of hard apple cider(13.7% ABV)(it was also manually pressed and crushed by hand), and 3 gallons of Taiwan wildflower and logan mead(10.6% ABV). All in secondary fermentation.

Reading this reminds me of my only attempt to make alcohol. Me and my roomate took water, sugar, and yeast, and put it in a big container. We let it ferment for about two weeks, and smelled it. It smelled quite alcoholic, but we never actually tried any.
Im a pretty big beer fan, me and my friends this friday are getting a keg of Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale which should be quite delicious.

Anyway..  I have all the stuff for the Belgian Stron Ale..    Ive had it for tooo long now so I MUST brew tomorrow...

Whats the longest youve ketp your crushed grains before useing them?  And my recipe notes dont tell me when to throw in the rock candy....  Id assume at the same time as the Alex Pale Syrup but I duno...

Im thinking of disolveing it in a sauce pan before adding it but again, I duno?

Like those pre-mix cannisters(cornelious, firestone, challenger) that pepsi and coke used for soda?

Quote:

I've kept it for a couple months, but that was only once. If they're in the bag, they'll last a little longer, but they will eventually go stale. Try to use it before one month has passed.

Well, I'm assuming you can't do full wort boils(ie, if you making a 5 gallon batch, you can't boil 5+ gallons plus all at once). You could add it all in the beginning, but it will affect your hop utilization. So the higher the starting gravity, the less bitterness and flavor you will be able to get out of the hops. What you could do is just add half the extract after you steep the grains. Then when there's like 15 minutes left in the boil, put in the rest of the extract and sugar. If you keep your extract hot, like in a hot water bath, you can add it when you kill the flame. As long as the extract is completely dissolved and the temperature is over 165 after its mixed in, your fine, there's no need to boil it.

Yeah, they're made from PET. www.better-bottle.com. These are specifically designed as fermentation vessels. Those blue water cooler jugs will not work, and cause the beer to oxidize.

Those or regular kegs... Ever been to Plano or Mr G's? The place is better than most beer and wine stores, they got just about everything you can think of... I used to work their when I lived in Plano and my old roomate is the manager. They throw away keg stuff all the time and theirs a room full with old kegs, taps, co2 canisters and crap.

wow, this thread actually picked up some interest....

That skunky smell & flavor in some beers is the "finishing hops", hops added at the very end, that don't get cooked all that much, so there is still a nice aroma, some types of hops are more desired for this because of their aroma quailtys, i have not brewed beer in prolly 5 years so the names of these desired finishing hops evade my memory at the moment.

I have also heard the term "skunked", used when a heiniken is bitter & skunky, and undesired as a result of this. This happenes as a result of the heiniken experienceing tempeture changes, like when it was in the cooler, and then the next day you pour off the warm water & throw more ice in & the beer gets cold again, just like wine, you can not do this to heiniken, but i have noticed that cheap beer is not effected by this.

Skunked beer is spoiled. No doubt about it.

Someone mentioned above that skunking is isomerized hops.
They are dead on. Generally exposure to light will cause this.

Clear and green bottles provide little or no protection for beer.

I have been making mead. I started with a few one gallon batches and Ive now got two 3 gallon batches going as well as 3 one gallon batches. I love the way that you can play with the mead while it is brewing, something I never did while brewing beer. I have one gallon of mead that I have been adding spices and honey to for about 5 months now. It is starting to come together real nice! I still brew beer, but not as much as mead now.
