Wait until after this big fucking hurricane hits New Orleans. I was just reading this article on CNN.com http://www.cnn.com/2005/WEATHER/08/28/katrina.neworleans/index.html
Quote:
Nagin also cautioned that the port of New Orleans handles much of the nation's oil transportation, meaning that an interruption in operations could have "a significant impact on the cost of oil.")
This is the mayor of New Orleans talking.

Pfft! Speculators are just looking for reasons to jack up the price even more, any way they can. ("Oh, it's raining in Florida! Quick, jack up the price another $5!") Every day, this whole oil stinks more and more like some form of Enron-style chicanery.....

The reason the price fluctuation is so wild is because petroleum is a rapidly dwindling resource. If all of a sudden there were only 30 cows left on earth what do you think that would do to the price of beef?

or milk!?!?! assuming they were milk cows.
seriosuly though...there have been some *possible* links to this hurricane season, the lack of el nino which was supposed to be here this year if i remember right, and our oil consumption. This also has to do with greenhouse gases and the increasing global temperature.

Well, true - it isn't entirely the oil industry's fault. After all, a lot of Americans DID buy gas-guzzling SUV's and the like. And, of course, there's the increased demand from a booming China. Still and all, I strongly suspect that speculators are taking a too much of an advantage of these factors and are causing oil prices to be artificially high. If only we did as Brasil has done and has eliminated dependancy on foreign oil completely by utilising good 'ol homegrown ethanol...

Yeah, it's not as though I believe there's a specific section of the government devoted to hoarding oil, but I do believe they are enabling massive oil companies to get richer and richer, while prices go up for us.
I could just be crazy though.

Yeah, the gov. definately helps the oil companies to do whatever they can in the name of profits. Oil companies have many obvious freinds government, and they also have one of the highest, if not the highest, amount of lobbyists as well.

It's all about supply/demand, I'm afraid. World consumption has now matched or even outpaced world production.
Peak Oil is here. Welcome to the post-oil era.
