What happens when...

let's say i know someone who is using cased rye. what happens if the colonized rye, after being cased, is not covered up w/ aluminum foil as some teks recommend. perhaps it is put right into the terrarium and has light available to it...will this hinder growth in any way?

it?s not the best thing to do. the pupose of covering and puting warm is for mycelium to establish itself in the casing and colonize it to just under the surface. then it should be uncovered and put into terrarium.
it will eventually work anyway, but it might take longer to fruit, also the first flush might be smaller.
