re-used jars, got contams before innoc

i decided it would probably be ok to re-use the 14 jars i have, so i ran em thru the dishwasher. when i was ready to mix up my substrate, i washed out the jars again with warm water and soap. i packed them with the substrate and stuck them up in a cupboard until i could pressure cook them.

well 4 days later i was ready...until i noticed this pungent odar coming from the cupboard, and there was white/gray shit growin inside... how did i get contams? do i need to buy new jars? i was thinking about boiling them in water for an hour or so, rewasshing, then pc them right away...

any advice would be great, im attempting casings this time

Im soaking my jars in bleach water right now. I store my empty ones sealed airtight with a lil mist of alcohol. Besides, It was kinda dumb to make them days before you could sterilize them, ya?

ya...but i dont grow at my crib anymore...tha cops kept makin friendly visits to my apartment complex...so i cleaned everything up...now im at the bat cave but i dont drive, so i only get over there every other day

The contams. didn't necessarily come from the jars being dirty, it could even be a contam. in the cupboards you put them in. - FungusMan has the right idea though if you are reusing jars that would be the way to do it.

wash and dry old jars, then make sure you sterilize them the day you fill with the substrate. after that you can store them until you are ready to use them without to many worries.

The problem was not reused jars. The problem was you waited 4 days after preparing the jars to pressure cook them. That is the problem, rice and verm is full of natural contams.

I would not go over 12-24 hours after preparing jars to pressurecook them. Its best to inoculate as early as possible it seams, if mycellium can get rolling before bacteria gets a foothold.

waitaminnit, lemme get this straight...

you say you washed your jars real well, mixed up some substrate, and left them 4 days without pressure cooking?

if so, your contam didn't come from your jars, it came from your substrate... your substrate fermented, as it will if you leave your jars uncooked for as little as twelve hours before you pressure cook...

washing jars once is all you need to do... even nasty dirty jars will be sterile after pressure cooking

always PC immediately after making your jars up, and you won't have this problem

EDIT: as baraka has already pointed out two posts earlier... DOH!

So, your jars contam'd pre-pc without anything in them? I often soak my grains in the jars overnight, and find cobweb and bacteria growing within the 24 hours that I let them sit. I just rinse and pc as usual, no problems so far. Oh, and all the jars are re-used, rusty lids and all, contams are to be expected in anything that has not been pc'd I would think.
Just MO, I'm a newb, so take it with a grain of salt.

you should have sterilized the jars before storing, you've provided the contams with everything they needed to grow, nutrients, and water, it's not because of the jars, it's because you chose not to sterilize them before storing a few days

yes, unless it's solidified and separated, then you can eat and drink it, it's curds and whey

the answers you've recieved about it being from not sterilizing the substrate are
correct, to prevent it in the future, sterilize the substrate and dont let it sit
more than a week befoe inoculation, it will also help you to see if you're
sterilization procedure are right before you start knocking them up
