PRIDE GP 2005 discussion thread (WARNING spoilers)
    #4590459 - 08/28/05 09:24 AM (18 years, 7 months ago)

just watched the silva vs arona fight...FUCK FUCK FUCK i wanted silva to win..but nonetheless it was a great fight...1st round it was on the ground, arona on top pounding on silva. 2nd round not much action in the first 2 mins, standup with mainly silva kicking to score points...afterwards arona took silva to the ground and started pounding. silva was doing a good job punching back but it went to a unanimous decision for arona...

next to watch... overeem vs rua

i'm really going for chute boxe...so i hope rua wins and takes the belt. but then again i really like overeem as well and i've been going for him since he's the underdog...

what a fucking disappointment :frown:

and i think you know who will win the main event..my prediction...fedor

so the rua vs overeem fight...

from a woman's perspective..damn overeem has a fucking hot ripped body  but then rua is a handsome bugger :P

ok for reals now...1st round lots of standup action, wow overeem's reach is good, loads of kneeing..i love it when i see muay thai in these fights...damn overeem had about 2 guillotine attempts and rua was able to pull out...it's all on the ground now...then it's standup and overeem is rocked by rua...FUCK A GOOD FIGHT...after 6 mins into the 1st round overeem looks pretty tired and running out of energy, rua has side mount and is pounding on overeem...soon becomes full mount..overeem is getting pounded on

that's it...rua wins!

RUA VS ARONA GO RUA

werdum vs zentsov

werdum being apart of hte crocop squad gym, specialist in brazillian jiu jitsu...supposidly he's an up and coming fighter (someone to watch just like in my opinion joakim hansen )

fight starts off with werdum doing a flying knee kick and missing. goes to the ground...nice...werdum won by triangle choke 6 mins into the 1st round

zentsov looks like a big teddy bear :p what's up with the russians and looking calm all the fucking time

ok so the brazillian anthem is played...it's chute boxe vs the brazillian top team...

no real staredown betrween the two unlike the one arona and silva had...

the fight goes down after a few seconds...arona on top...then rua gets out...rua tries to stop him hits him a bit on the ground....fight goes back up ...rua strikes arona is ROCKED...fight goes back on the ground...you can tell arona is fatigued...they go back down again rua with side mount and pounding on arona's ribs...rua starts pounding on rua...and the fight is over after 2 something minutes

RUA WITH A TKO....RUA WON THE TOURNAMENT!!

now for the main event...crocop comes in with hish entourage with the usual duran duran theme song...

then comes the calm cool and collect fedor...let me just say i really want to fucking kick the arse of that bitch who announces each fighter's name...god she reminds me of some witch or something...

anyways...national anthem of croatia is played..then the russian anthem which is just one fabulous anthem by the way..makes me proud of russia even though i'm not fucking russian

speech balhb alhb alh...belt taken from emilanenko...now the FIGHT BEGINS

1st round start of hte round all stand up...crocop attempts his deadly left high kick but it's blocked...ots of striking going on...another attempt of a left kick by crocop and it's answered with a right hand strike...oh wow this is looking fucking good so far...another attempt of a left highkick by crocop and fedor falls out of the ring but also manages to take down crocop...both go back to standing, whoa crocop gets rocked....he manages to stay up...now it goes to the ground and fedor is on top...fedor has a nosebleed from a left hand punch by crocop and the fight is timed out

oh fuck it looks good so far...fuck me talking about it..u guys need to WATCH THIS FIGHT

My first pride card I've ordered and Shogun impressed the hell out of me. I thought he was going to get beat down after the first part of the semis but after slicking out of that guiltoine he was pure urgency! urgency! emergency! beat down.

I thought Cro Crop did alot better then the announcers gave him credit for and he landed some good leather too bad Fedor is from Cybertron.

Wow. Well, I just got done watching the whole ppv of Pride Final Conflict 2005. It was truly a surprising event each round and battle of the way.

First of all, I was under the impression that I'd have to wait a week for the ppv to come out in USA.. but then I decided to double check, and lo and behold, I discovered that my cable company offered it today at 5:30 pm. Gleefully, of course, I decide to order the hell out of that! And this was yesterday, mind you, so all of you MMA fans can imagine how suspenseful and damn near tortorous the wait was, let alone the fights themselves.
I made sure to stay away from all the MMA sites, and I was even hesitant to browse the Pub today.. Thank God the Shroomery isn't filled with too many MMA-noob-fans; my whole night could've been spoiled. Hell, I even refused to open a PM from Liquid Smoke, just out of spoil-paranoia. Interestingly, directly thereafter, I see the Pub's current thread on the forum index: "Pride GP 2005 Discussion Thread..." Created by Boo.
I stopped right there, and decided to exit the Shroomery for the day. I suspect Boo wouldn't ever dare to spoil another's MMA-veiwing, of course... But this was the most anticipated MMA-fight in history!! I just had to go the whole nine yards in beefing up the spoil-prevention security.

So, finally came the PPV..
I was thrilled, pumped up and ready... You'd almost think I was going to be fighting in that ring, if you saw me, heh.

Then comes the first fight...
Igor, a very popular, well-liked and favored fighter amongst many. Such a genuinely nice guy, as almost any could easilly tell. Yet, he's quite the assbeater to be taken seriously. Personally, I thought this fight was going to be pretty darn lopsided with his opponent Nakamura. But boy was I surprised at the neck-to-neck leads, by the two fighters. I coulnd't tell if Igor just wasn't having his night that night, or if Nakamura was just that good. So I was a bit surprised when Igor lost... Although, in retrospect, it was still a pretty close fight. Igor made some surprisingly good armbar escapes, very rapidly. I was impressed.

Moving along..
Wanderlei Silva vs Ricardo Arona.
Oh man, I was stoked to see these two fight.. Especially after the intense animosity shown between the two at the weigh-ins... I was really unsure of how this fight was going to turn out. I knew Arona was going to give Wandy a hard time.. And I was somewhat surprised at the performance of Wandy, or more specifically, the lack of the usual aggression and Wandy-style fighting. But the more and more Arona laid on top of Wandy over time, the more I realized it was easily going to be a judges decision for Arona. And indeed I was correct. Even after that suspicion was confirmed, I was still in a slight shock at the fact that Wandy lost. But, this is MMA after all... and if there's anything that MMA has taught us, it's that anybody can be taken out - and I'm not talking about a dinner and a movie.

Mauricio Shogun and Alistair Overeem... I thought Overeem was goingto get Shogun in his guillotine choke, and win it in a rather short amount of time.. Boy was I wrong. Again, I was surprised. Shogun prevailed. Enough said.

Tank's fight with Yoshida. Eh, well, I was excited just to see Tank fight.. but not all surprised at the outcome. I suppose Tank did control alot, but y'know how Tank mixes with guys like Yoshida. Overall, it just wasn't a good matchup for Tank. I'd rather see Tank fight Hunt or the like.

Pretty decent fight with Fabricio Werdum and Roman Zentsov.
Was sorta expecting Roman to win. Yet, again, I was surprised. Did I mention this whole event has been...surprising?

Ah.... And then....

THE FIGHT

Fedor Emelianenko vs Mirko Cro-cop

The fight I was anticipating the most.. just as everyone in the World that was watching. By now, I was starting to worry that I was going to have yet another "surprise", as I was really hoping that Fedor would emerge victorious... and with the way things have went all night, I was almost having second thoughts. I literally talked to Fedor on the screen: "C'mon Fedor... Win! Don't let me down now... Beat him!" as he was walking to the ring.

Then the bell rings. Fedor is actively leading, and starts pulling out his strategy, and did he ever execute the just the *ideal* strategy for Cro-cop beautifully. And wow... I couldn't freakin' believe some of the things I saw! Fedor even gave Mirko a taste of his own medicine, with some high kicks of his own!

My jaw dropped in amazement. "What the hell is going on? This is almost too backwards!!"
His Muay Thai training shined through, and in Cro-cop's defense, I think his ground-game training showed well too, as Fedors GnP attacks were somewhat neutralized. I also really have to give Fedor serious credit for even taking Mirko down at all - which is something most fighters have never, ever been able to pull off. On top of that, Fedor took 2 or 3 liver shots - clean shots! Fedor's teammate Magedemov couldn't even stand after just ONE hit to the liver.
I think Fedor was even grazed/cut on his head by Cro-cops attempted left-high-kick... and the machine is still fighting, of course. Extremely impressive.
Mirko CroCop, in his defense, is still a phenomenal fighter, which conversely, only exemplifies how good Fedor is.

Fedor has once again lived up to his Terminator stigma, and showed the world that he IS one unstoppable fighting machine, with his dominating win over Mirko Cro-cop. I gained even more respect and impression for Fedor, which is saying quite a bit. Although, the KGB Headquarters could really use some Dermatological-scientists to implement better skin-technology on Fedor. Fedors skin once again showed its sensitivity, with a mildly battered up face and cut. I almost dreaded that the fight would end in a No Contest, due to doctor stoppage for all the bleeding. Thankfully, that never happened. Anyway, congratulations to Fedor. Fedor, you are THE Man. The Greatest HW in MMA History.

FEDOR>God>Everyone else.

THE END

And then the final conflict for the GP.

Well, I thought it was going to be another somewhat lopsided match, similar to Arona vs Silva. Once again, I was surprised! What the hell kind of fancy fucking kick was that from Shogun? That was something else. Pretty ballsy too. Anyway, I was expecting Arona to take it to the ground and dominate... But Shogun just wasn't letting that happen. He even got some knees to Arona's head - something didn't even pull off. And so.. Shogun managed to get Arona down, and started pounding on Arona's face till the referee stopped it.
Good job by Shogun. Although Arona could've been a little better, methinks. Anyway, after Shogun won, something dawned upon me. A suspicion. A suspicion that.. perhaps.. Just maybe.. Silva might've gave the fight to Arona, so his protege' Shogun, could hold the belt, and this way, Silva wouldn't have to fight Shogun, who is on his same team. In retrospect, I remembered Silva seemed a little less reactive of the loss to Arona, than I'd expect him to be - on top of his lackluster performance [although it was still a very heated one]. Ah, well, the world may never know. Any big fight will always have its own questions and wonders.
All in all, 'twas a good fight.

It was a good show, and easily worth the $30 for the PPV.

I am a satisfied MMA fan.

The End
or... is it?

Thanks Boo.

Here's a clip of Fedor giving Crocop a high kick of his own:

It's pretty damn funny, considering the two fighter's usual styles.

sure a fighter has loyalty to their team, but when it comes to it..doesn't matter whom you fight even if they're on the same team..it's all about one's self. i just think silva reacted how he did because it probably dawned on him that he should have been more agressive in that fight. either way, silva will eventually fight rua or arona if he wants to keep the middleweight belt...which he probably does. or...maybe he's past his prime now? but yeah, the world will never know

WAAARRRR SHOGUN!!!!

I think the entire event was just an emotional rollercoaster for me.

Watching Wanderlei lose the way he did, in a very cheap manner with Arona simply laying and praying his way to a decision. Then he rubs it into Wanderlei, which got me more pissed at Arona.

Then watching Shogun come out to fight Overeem, I swear I felt sorry for the guy. The only people cornering him were Elvis Schrembri, his brother Rua, and some other random guy. No Raphael, no Rudimar.

It made me feel like there was no hope left for Chute Boxe.

But looking at Ninja's face he had this expression on him like smiling and excited thinking to himself "oh maan wait till all these people get a load of my lil brother".

Of course watching NInja dismantle the taller Overeem was amazing. He absorbed so much punishment to finally get the mount.

WHen he came out to fight Arona, and you saw that HUGE entourage that came with him, I was touched. IT was sorta like "Chute Boxe's last hope" kind of feeling. Watching Wanderlei off to the side supporting his man was also a big emotional thing for me.
And when he began fighting Arona i was scared because I felt Arona would just dominate him. But low and behold, Shogun had an answer for all of Arona's ground attacks, dominating him with submission attempts, passing the gaurd, it was soo impressive.

Then the KO was beautiful. Sweet sweet revenge. I had to repeat play it atleast 8 times, and did it again in slo-mo.

Such poetic justice.

Oh, and mma tracker is up, b ut it's under a different address. Cuz some idiot posted the original address onto a public forum.

we should talk about who we'd like to see fight each other! oh if only these fights would happen...

here's my 2 cents...

for heavyweights, i'd like to see crocop vs emilianenko again later on. reason being is that  fedor has said crocop was the most challenging fight he's had so far. crocop pretty much got tired after the 1st round...if he changed his training to endure more than 30 mins of fighting then there would be a possibility that he could beat fedor.

and again for heavyweights..i'd really love to see fedor vs his old teammate sergei kharitonov. kharitonov i think has the possibility to excel in PRIDE. he's a pretty tallented fighter...a bit underrated actually. let's see how he does in the future...but if anything, i think he could be a good match for fedor.

and yet again for heavyweights...i'd like to see fedor vs arlovski. reason being although i respect arlovski for being a good UFC fighter, i think he'd get his ass whooped by fedor. i'd just like to see the asswhoopin

light heavyweights...waderlei vs rua, would they have too much respect for each other being team mates?

chuck liddel vs quinton jackson again...so the rumour has it jackson might fight in the UFC...if this is the case i'd like to see how his training with team punishment is coming along and i'd like to see him tko liddel again

(ok it's late and i'm typing too much...just names for now)

middleweights...phil baroni vs rich franklin, ryo chonan vs phil baroni

welterweights...rematch between georges st pierre and matt hughes...i like st pierre he's an awesome fighter

lightweights...rematch between gomi and joakhim hansen...i really believe hansen is going to become PRIDE lightweight champ, although i like takanori gomi i wanna see him get his asswhooped at least once

CroCop has said he will set another path ahead of himself in the MMA world towards the second chance of fighting Fedor, with the three main obstacles being Hunt, Barnett, and Nog. [Possibly Kharitonov, but rumors has it that he may be going to K-1]

So he may or may not ever really get a second chance - those are tough contenders for the belt.

And I'd also like to see Aleksander in a rematch with CroCop. Maybe now Aleks learned a thing or two, watching his brother handling it like a pro.

And btw, I think Fedor would still stop CroCop every time. Keep in mind, folks, that Fedor basically beat CroCop in a HANDICAP match - he didn't/couldn't use his mean right punch in his GnPing and such. He fought with ONE left hand/punching capability - and imagine if he were able to use that deadly right hand of his. That would surely have made a world of a difference in his GnPing that fight, and some people tend to overlook that, and instead claim that CroCop's ground defense was just too good for Fedor - not that it wasn't good at all, of course... Both fighters fought pretty well. I think Fedor would just come out on top each time, though. You could tell CroCop was finally intimidated now that he was in the ring with Fedor. Fedor just has that much presence... And during the fight, it must've disheartened CroCop to give his solid strikes to Fedor's face, liver kicks and swift kick to his head, and to have Fedor go through it like he was unfazed.. That surely didn't bode well for CroCop's confidence, as he realized what kind of man he was dealing with.
Anyway, Fedor won't be fighting for a long time now, as he has to have immediate surgery on his hand for it to heal properly.

In the HW division, I'd love to see Andrei Arlovski come to Pride and take a shot at Fedor. I think this fight would be pretty damn good, actually - Arlovski is a man to be feared. Honestly, at the moment, I can't think of any other real threat to Fedor in Pride's HW division. Maybe... MAYBE Kharitinov, but I just don't see that going the distance.

I'd also like to see Hunt and Tank go at it - if Tank still decides to stick around. I'm sure Hunt would have the advantage - but if they both decide to stand-up, then it's a fight to enjoy.

I'd love to see Chuck fight either Wandy or Shogun... That would determine WHO is truly the No. 1 at 205 in the world. I wouldn't mind seeing Rampage in UFC - I think he'd have alot more success there.

Rickson vs Silva [Haha, I know]

And actually, a rematch between Silva and Arona, seriously. Arona may have won that fight, but he didn't "Beat" Silva. I'm sure he won because Wandy was falling asleep while Arona took a nap on top of him. Har har.

Liquid, I want to hear your in-depth expert analysis of the Fedor vs CroCop fight, as well.

Well, Fedor vs Cro Cop was amazing, although the factors which came into play were pretty much as predicted.

It was amazing to see Fedor standing with Cro Cop and pushing the action. He even threw a high kick!!! I was very surprised to see Fedor so boldy pursuing Cro COp.

I must say the first round was the best. I feel that Cro Cop was definitely giving Fedor a good beating on occasion. But Fedor is Fedor. Is he simply unhuman and that is the only logical explanation.

He doesn't feel pain. He doesn't get tired. And he won't stop untill he's got you on the ground and has beat you into the canvas.

Although I was also very impressed with Cro Cop's gaurd. He was basically able to absorb Fedor's attempts at a full mount and defended very well against the best GnP in the game. But Fedor is without a doubt, the top ranked heavyweight in the Country.

As for upcoming matches, just within Pride there is so much to choose from.

I'd like to see Sergei take on Cro Cop, or Josh Barnett take on Cro Cop (this is more likley, Sakikabara signed Barnett in October and said he wants to see a rematch of Pride 28).

I think Barnett wil definitely shake up the heavyweight rankings. He's probably the most tactically sound HW the UFC has ever seen.

Pedro Rizzo is also in the mix. I'd like to see Rizzo get a tune up fight, maybe against Werdum or Hunt. I think MArk Hunt definitely needs more exposure in Pride, he was very impressive against Wanderlei at the New Years show.

Also, I want to see Rulon Gardner fight again. I think he has alot of potential as a heavyweight and he'll definitely draw in more American Fans. Maybe pit him up against Nogeira.

Either way, if they choose to have another HW grand prix, it could have the potential to be NUTS.

Personally, I feel that the UFC just isn't near the same level as Pride in terms of the quality of fighters. Just because they've always gotten rid of their most dominant Champions, and simply cutting their top level fighters really deteriorates the competition field.

I.e. Frank Shamrock, BJ Penn, Murilo Bustamante, Jens Pulver. These were all champions when they were cut from UFC contracts.

I just think Chuck wouldn't be able to Handle Wanderlei, let alone Quinton Jackson, or even Arona. And Shogun would absolutely obliterate him.

I think Pride should bring back QUinton Jackson, he was just such a unique fighter with an original style. I want Quinton to fight Arona again, or have him fight Vitor Belfort.

I also want to see Wanderlei get a rematch with Vitor Belfort, just to shut up all those UFC fans who hang this one victory over their heads. Wanderlei even said himself that he wants to avenge his KO loss to Vitor.

I think the upcoming Bushido tournament is going to be NUTS. I'm far more interested in the lightweight tourney than the welterweight (MW) tourney. At MW I think Dan Henderson is going to win it all.

Although the LW tourney by far has the potential to have THEE BEST LW's in the world. I mean they've already recruited two of the top 3 SHOOTO fighters (Kawajiri and Hansen) along with Gomi, and Yves Edwards, the top ranked LW from the UFC, and Jens Pulver, the previous title holder in the UFC.

Supposedly Gomi is going to fight Kawajiri in the first round of that GP, which would be INSANE. I think the finals will be Yves Edwards vs Gomi. I personally don't know much about Hansen although his fight against Imamura was very VERY impressive. So many question marks to be answered...
