Stanislaus County Drug Agents Claim Record Marijuana Seizure August 26, 2005 - kxtv10.com
Veteran drug agents say they've never seen anything like it. A raid in rural Stanislaus County netted a record marijuana seizure with an estimated street value of up to $40 million.
A sheriff's department helicopter initially discovered the veritable plantation in remote Del Puerto Canyon in western Stanislaus County, near the Santa Clara County line.
Drug agents said they found acres of marijuana growing in the canyon. By the time they were done cutting down the plants, they had enough to fill 10 U-Haul trucks.
"A lot of them were six to seven feet tall, very high quality," said Lt. Marvin Harper of the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department. "Each plant worth $1,500 to $4,000 in some places."
Harper believes his agents found at least 17,000 plants which had been kept alive through high-tech irrigation.
No arrests were made in connection with the seizure, but police found evidence that someone was living on site. Sheriff's deputies will return to collect the rest of the plants. The marijuana will be burned at a local landfill
