Please tell me I'm not that stupid!

Ok, I went out and bought perlite and vermiculite today. I am planning on using the poor man's pod. I looked up what perlite is online and it says that it's a volcanic rock. Can I use this for the lava rock on the bottom of the poor man's pod? When I put the air stones under it? Otherwise I don't really see where it fits in.
Am I being ridiculously stupid?
Thanks to those who take the time to answer this.

If you're asking if you could use perlite as an alternative to lava rock or geolite, then yes. I've used perlite for my own terrarium and have had excellent results

Just be sure to hydrate your perlite! (I put a thin layer of dry perlite on top of the wet before putting my cakes on. It's about time I start a casing!)

Good luck and happy farmin'!

perlite is not volcanic rock... perlite is regular sand that has been heated until it puffs up like popcorn... it's totally inert...

if you're going to put cakes on it, put a splash of peroxide in the water, and you won't have problems with bacterial contams

Perlite is great for humidification because it has a very large surface area for the water to evaporate off of. In fact, if you are casing, or at least dunk-and-rolling, you can get by with perlite alone (no fishtank bubblers), as long as you have a spray bottle to mist when needed.

Also,
Perlite is messy. It tends to get ground up into very fine particles. So before you dump the perlite, cut a hole in the corner of the bag and fill/rinse the perlite with water, then drain. Otherwise, you're likely to get a very unpleasant dust cloud when you dump it.
When I was using perlite and PMP technique, my perlite eventually crumbled and got wet to form a kind of cement. Try to avoid this--and if it should happen, replace the perlite.

Good luck!
and P.S. - The only stupid questions are unasked ones.
