    #4588165 - 08/27/05 05:35 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

a foaf made a spore print today but there seems to be some moister on the tin foil its in a glove box should he leave it in there till it dries or should he fold it up now and put it in a clean zip lock baggie
this pic was taken though the glass of the glove box so its not the best pic

what do you guys think?how does it look first one ever

he should fold the foil over, covering the print and allow the print to dry for several hours before putting it in the baggie

moisture does sometimes form on the foil, due to the fact that the cap has a lot of moisture in it. Leave it in there for a few hours after removing the cap and it will dry up.

the print is probably still "wet" and folding the foil over it will cause it to rub off to the other side of the foil.

That print isn't the best print in the world, but not bad for your first one.

thanks guys...what would you suggested he do to improve the print?
I don't think leaving it open will hurt nothing since it is in a sterile environment so he will let it dry before folding it?with your guys help i am sure he will do better on the next one, what do you all think he should do to improve it the next time?

I print mine in a 1/2 pint wide mouth just using the ring and a big piece of tvyek for the top, works pretty good that way

to improve the print try using glass or reynolds heavy foil, cut the stem as close to the gills as you can, place it on the foil and cover it with a clear glass
let the cap sit overnight under the glass, the print will be very dark and
near perfect

at least cover the print with a cup or something, call me paranoid but I'm a
stickler for clean prints and cultures, Alounacara can atest to that

No just let the cap print in the jar, the tyvek is to allow some air exchange so the cap doesnt rot
then take the cap out of your jar and inject a bunch of sterile water blasting the spore print :smirk:
Then suck it up in several syringes

when I do spore prints I don't use a glove box or any of that stuff....and no I don't get contaminated prints.

basically what I do is wait for the veil to tear and then wait for the cap to open up a little so the gills are showing a bit.

I then get a very wide and long tupperware "tray" and swab the whole thing down in rubbing alcohol. I then get a piece of aluminum foil that is 2x's as long as the tray, and fold it in half.

I then swab the side of the aluminum foild that I'm using for the print with rubbing alcohol. I then place the foil in the tray.

Then I cut the caps off of the stems as close as possible to the inside of the cap so it can lay completely flat. I then lay down about 30-40 caps on my sheet about 1" apart.

Then I cover the tray with it's lid and leave it for about a day in a cool dark place.

I then remove all of the caps with a pin, replace the lid, but leave it open just a crack so the prints can dry.
