Is it OK to take a print from a questionable cake ?
    #4588151 - 08/27/05 07:32 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

Hey there,
I've got a cake that looks like its starting to contam (quarter size green spot on cake) but it's got a really nice shroom on that i'd like to print. I don't plan on eating that particular shroom, but was wondering if shrooms made from that print would be OK.

Thanks !

I wouldn't. If you can visibly see green mold, chances are that thousands of mold spores are already floating around your cake, and possibly landed on the gills of that cap.

I'd almost guarantee it

 so would I.  Contaminated sub = contaminated print.

Thanks folks...that's what I was afraid of. As much as I hated to do it, I tossed the cake. I also have 3 others in the same chamber, which so far are showing no signs of contamination...I was thinking maybe I should clean out the chamber and monitor these 3 cakes carefully.

I've got 5 more cakes incubating that are about 5-7 days from being ready to birth. What do you think...is it worth keeping the other 3 cakes in the chamber, or should I toss them too ? (They've got some shrooms on them also, but nothing real big...(4th flush)

I sure don't want to risk messing up these new cakes by having them exposed to contamination....but I hate to waste the fruits on these 3 cakes.

Thanks !

well, if the other cakes aren't showing signs of contams and it is the 4th flush, cross contamination probably did not happen. I would go ahead and let the final flush run it's course, just keep an eye on them.

After these are done, I would clean out the terrarium b4 you birth the 5 new cakes just to be on the safe side.

Thanks for the advice srgtm1a,

That's exactly what i'm gonna do. I went ahead and cleaned the fruiting chamber and put in fresh perlite...so we'll see what happens. Even it it goes bad, at least I got 3 nice flushes off these cakes.

I also decided to just go ahead and buy a new plastic tub for the new cakes, just to be on the safe side. I've read that these contams can be really hard to get rid of.

Thanks !

yes, they can be really hard to get rid of. It can be equally as hard to find the source of the problem once they are present.

you could by a new tub if you want, or you could clean out your old terrarium, wash with warm water and soap, dry, and then rub down in rubbing alcohol and let dry. That should do the trick, but since the tubs are so cheap, you could just get a new one if you are really concerned. GL TO YA!
