Massive inoculation - would it work?
    #4586625 - 08/27/05 05:21 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Suppose...

Suppose you have a substrate that needs to be wetted to become active (lets say something like a flour, cardboard, sawdust) and that you wet it, not with water, but with a concentrated spore solution.

Every square milimeter will have several sporae. The sporae will germinate and immediately become dikaryotic. Now lets say germination takes 24 hours.. You might just have full growth at a mere two days.

However, the resulting culture would be extremely heterogenous since every sq. milimeter has another genetic pairing.

1...Would massive inoculation work?
2...Would massive inoculation overwhelm the substrate as to not need sterile technique?
3...Would massive inoculation actually yield mushrooms or
4...Would massive inoculation be useful as spawn only?

If the process yields possibly inedible mushrooms (microcontams) it would still be successful as a means to multiply spores from lessay a 1/8oz baggie.

Your input please!

.
Do you think it would work? (choose many)
You may choose many
Massive Inoculation probably colonizes a substrate very rapidly
Massive Inoculation likely overwhelms most/all contams from taking hold
Massive Inoculation might form useful spawn
Massive Inoculation might form mushrooms (even if only for spores/tissue samples)
I don't think any of these will work

I use to do all kinds of tests like this I found if ya want fast instead of more solution just make it more concentrate or dark. I hear people say clear are as good as dark I am definitely not one of them.
Out of who know how many syringes and who know how many casings and cakes dark syringes if made right have always kept up with my LC. 9 days average for quart jars to colonize and I only shake em one time when the spores go in.

Everybody needs to do little tests like this cause as we know with mushrooms 1000 people try the exact same thing and we get 1000 different answers.

But if you use spore solution as your hydrating water then your entire medium will be the inoculation point. Thats basically like densely sowing your entire field. Now in agriculture that tends to drown out weeds. After all growth starts everywhere at once.

How "dark" would your spore solution be? Let's say you got a 4" print, how many ml of spore solution for such a print would produce optimal colonisation?

Is that left pic taken this month? If so I'm going to nominate your pic for the Pic o/t Month!

9 days old

How about using a thick LC, instead of spores.

My first time jars are at 2 weeks now and just fully colonised. When I nocked them up, I used 5cc's per half pint jar. Thank god the jars seemed a little dry when I got them. It still took me two weeks on WBS cakes.

Personally, I've never seen anything good come from massive spore inoculation. It matters little if a jar is 'colonized' in six days or two weeks, if colonization is merely defined as turning fully white. What matters is total harvest. Most have noticed both a higher rate of contaminants and lesser harvests with massive spore inoculation over using less spores or a liquid isolate as agar suggested. Of course, there are always exceptions, but my experience has been that in the majority of cases, less spores are better.
