COLINIZATION QUESTION
    #458619 - 11/14/01 09:06 PM (23 years, 3 months ago)

it's been a week and I still dont have any sign of colonization... I innoculated 1 pint jars with 2cc of Purto's, and some with Treasure Coast. I've placed them in my incubator which temperature is kept between 80F-86F.

There are no white spots. There arent any noticable spots. The only thing i've noticed is that my subsrate is starting to seperate at certain areas within the jar. Is this a sign of colonization?

Maby im being impatient, but what can i expect?

What are you useing for substrate? Usually the reason my jars don't grow is because I mixed the substrate too dry, actually I have a few jars that are this way and have been this way for a while. Pretty sure its because they dont have enough moisture.

Im using brown rice flower with Verm. I followed MMGG tek to the T... So I should have noticed some sign of colonization by now?

If so, is there anything I can do to correct this problem?

give it a few more days dude, I use Dark Rye Flour and verm instead of BRF, it seems to colonise a LOT faster!

give it another week, if nothing happens then start over. maybe you didn't wait long enough after boiling/pressure cooking

Dark Rye Flower is mixed the same way as brown rice flower. I pressure cook for an hour in a commercial pressure cooker. Is this long enough?

yup. mixed the exact same way, 1/4,1/4/2/3 ...boil for an hour, don't know about pressure cooking, I think it's less than an hour though, 15 PSI at like 30-45 mins I believe? check the teks on this website

What's the difference between dark rye flour and rye flour?

did you let the jars thouroughly cool down before inoculating. I know the first time that I inoculated jars i was so impatient to get it done that i sprayed the spores in when the jars were still warm to the touch, and I did not see any colonization for about 2 1/2 to 3 weeks. But after that tehy took off and I was happily successful with my first batch.

yah, they wer room temperature, no warmth coming out of them what so ever!

Is there a way to inject more moisture into the jars of dry rice cakes without introducing contaminents (Assuming the jars became dry)?

I have read that you can inject more moisture using syringes that are sterile. Make sure you sterilize a syringe or syringes very well, boil some water and suck it up into a syringe and wait for it to cool. Once it has cooled put it in the same holes you used to inoculate and spray in about a 1/2 to 1cc of water at each site.

To speed up colinization it was said before I though it to increase room temp of friendly spore sprouts. They like it hot and MOIST. Nomally they should sprout and fluff 7 days after prime conditions. And colonize to the extreme they will. What you tink? Spark em up and spread dem with HIENZ. Cause de best tings come to does who wait. And even better tings come to those who waited already and know how not to wait?!

too dry too dry, its seperating the way a desert floor does,

DOn't heat them up so much next time, or if you do, place tie foil over the jars lid, to cover the holes and prevent evaporation

DOn't heat them up so much next time... I have restuarant grade pressure cooker. And i cooked them for an hour and a half. (The instructions of the pressure cooker says begin timeing when the nob on the pressure cooker begins raddling). So if i eliminate the waiting time for that, they have been pressurized for an hour. And i kept aluminum foil over the micron magic filter discs.

SO my question is, how long should I pressure cook 14, quart jars for?

I did this with a 3 lb and 1lb bag of rye berries my first time.  Wasnt nearly as sterile as I should’ve been and put bag of rye berries directly on heating pad. Because I was an idiot.  Bag was definitely warm.  I noticed no signs of life for 3 weeks.  Then I was about to toss the big bag but decided to just see if anything was in the middle.  When I shook both bags they exploded with white fuzzies and within a week I mixed the 1 lb bag to sub at 100% colonization.

Then other times I’ve seen growth in 48 hours.  I guess it’s genetics as well from what I gather.  I would second what was said about waiting another week except if there’s nothing there you might try shaking it up real good, waiting 48 hours, and if nothing then toss.
