High elevation effecting sterilization
    #458579 - 11/14/01 10:15 PM (15 years, 10 months ago)

A friend lives at around 9000 feet, after pressure cokking pf jars for 40 mins at 15 psi almost all are lost to contamination.

He has performed this method many times with success until he moved to this high elevation.

Does anyone have any experience at high elevations?

High altitude would reduce the temp and pressure within the PC but a fourty min sterilization should still do the job. If the contams are bacterial, the problem could be with sterilization. If they are yeasts or molds, the problem lies elswhere because these are easily killed by heat.

I don't believe that altitude is the problem. If you were at 10,000 ft, the air pressure would be 10.2 psi, therefore if you have your pressure cooker at 15 psi, you have 25.2 psia. Saturated steam at 25.2 is over 240 F (vs 250 F for sat steam at sea level). I don't think that< 10 F temp difference is going to cause huge contamination problems.

Do you use autoclaved H2O to prepare your syringes?

actually, they are correct but use wrong judgement. Any pressure cooker relies on a guage or a weight on top. The weight relies on gravity which would be not be any noticeable difference b/w elevations on earth. If you PC at 15psi it will be only 15psi inside the PC not any higher. The guage also measures the inside only and would only be 15psi. It's not 15 plus the psi on the outside. Now if you only boiled w/ a pot of water, the temperature would be different than, let's say, sea level.
