Random Junk : Polymers, Dog Food, Sponge Questions
    #4585323 - 08/26/05 10:11 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

OK, I have a few questions...

I was reading the archives and some one (i forget who) was growing on just puppy chow nutrient solution/vermiculite/polymers. WHAT TYPE OF POLYMERS?!?! It's been driving me crazy, I have no idea wtf this person was talking about...
So any info on that would be appreciated.

Now, Sponges...
Cellulose IS COTTON, right? I actually know for a fact it is, but just wondering if there are other things known as cellulose.
And cellulose sponges (going by the idea that cellulose is cotton), must be cotton, correct?

Now Dog Food...
How nutritious is nutrient solution made from dried dog food? Is it actually nutritous enough to grow fungi? (im talkin bout cubies)

Ive been toying with an Idea involving sponges (if you couldn't tell), and a nurtrient solution made of dog food.

Its pretty self explanitory, but yeah... I figured regular, cheapo cellulose sponges would be good as long as I could supply enough nutrients to the sponge.

I think it's a dang good idea, because of creativity, but as far as actually working.... meh, idunno.

Comments, answers?

Thanks!

we were talking about this sponge thing a day or 2 ago. i don't think it will work. if it did the shrooms would be so week in potency they wouldnt be worth eating. because shrooms get there potency from the substrate and a sponge cant compare to a nice thick substrate

I've never seen anybody really find the answer-- they think they have, so they stop thinking. But the job is to seek mystery, evoke mystery, plant a garden in which strange plants grow and mysteries bloom. The need for mystery is greater than the need for an answer."

Cross-linked Polyacrylamide, one trade name is WaterGrabber, you can find it as
a soil amendment at most garden supply stores, walmart and home depot, it's
supposed to be non-toxic and isnt supposed to break down for several years,
I'm not sure I trust scientist when it come to that sort of thing given that
a lot of meds are pulled from the market because they kill people and most
polymers give of VOCs for years after production.

yes and yes, cellulose is basicly any plant material, paper for instance is a
form of cellulose, cellulose insulation is shredded newsprint with a flame
retardant, make sure you know whats included in the content of any materials like that

incoprrect, usualy they are made from wood pulp

works wonders for tomatos, contains many trace elements as well as meat and bone
meal, if dampened it will support the growth of various molds and fungi, used
in agar it will allow mycelial growth. sterilization is key and many disagree with anything that contains meat or other product that rots like meat.

it's an interesting idea for an experiment, be aware of the possibility of bacterial and other contams developing.

Well thank you, I am glad I have that all cleared up now. (no sarcasm intended).

And kingfish, as far as potency goes, if they are utter shit, than I can always mix in some Phalaris extract into the nutrient solution, that should solve the problem, correct?
