Bringing a pipe on an airplane?

Hey I'm moving out east for university in a week and am wondering how to get my pipe out there. It's only a 4-5'' glass pipe, pretty small. Can I just carry it on me, or should i check it, or put it in carry-on baggage?
also, what would be the best way to clean it before-hand?

i personally would not carry on or check a pipe especially if it's been used ever. i would ship it by mail to your new location. you would not believe how strict & thorough they are at the airports these days. that's just my suggestion though. the best way to clean a pipe i've found is to use 4:20 cleaner you can buy at most smoke shops. it totally gets all the gunk out, santizes the smell and it's easy. you just shake it in a bag for a minute and voila!

You'd have to completely and I do mean COMPLETELY clean it. It is a glass pipe as long as it has NO TRACES of marijuana, as soon as it has any residue on it, it's marijuana paraphinelia. Personally I'd just get a new one at home, give it to a friend... but if u are adamant about carrying it on board, I'd hide it somewhere on myself because they probably won't search you personally, but all in all I think it's not worth the risk. Hope I could help.

they will search you personally if you're selected to be searched. you can be selected before you even step into the airport terminal. DO NOT CARRY ANYTHING ON YOUR BODY TAKE IT FROM ME. if you insist on carrying it with you, check it, don't carry it on you or in your carryon.

If you're going to carry it, clean out with 91% isopropyl alcohol a few times (use 1/4 of the bottle or a lil more) then rinse it with hot water really well. make sure to block the different holes with your fingers as you clean and water/alcohol builds up for this will allow different parts of the piece to expel the resin. If you have to scrape it off get a small pocket knife to, otherise try swabbing it or using toilet paper/paper towel. Then when it looks completely clean flame the bowl itself and then check it all over. then you can opt to let it air dry or use pipe cleaners or a hair dryer/fan whatever you feel like.

actually the metal detector question has its validity. If im in correct in thinking, color changing glass is fumed with metal. So, technically (assuming im right about the fuming), the metal in the pipes might be enough to set off the detector.
If you're going to bring it with you, dont keep it on you. They'll see what it is if you have it in your bag (and they feel like busting you), and if it sets off the detector you're fucked. If you check it in a piece of luggage, stick it pretty much near the bottom and hope it gets passed over.
Word of advice, they dont even let you bring a LIGHTER on the plane anymore. Just matches, so, if you inisist on carrying an illegal piece of material....hide it carefully, dont act suspicious, and pray to god you dont get seperated from your luggage like what just happened to me. Flying can be very tricky, if you miss a connection, or if your luggage goes AWOL, it can be a pain the ass and a lot of time before you see them again.
You're better off mailing it via ups or fed ex, just pack it in with some foam peanuts (you can buy em at staples or the like), put some insurance on it, and send it off

The newer metal detectors check denisty (ceramic guns and knives can;t get through) so it might go off.

Either mail it, or leave it at home and buy a new one at a local smoke shop up there. There's bound to be one somewhere.
It's not worth the risk of taking it on the plane.

I'd like to reinforce this statement. People say that you have such low odds to be selected that it's hardly a risk, and that mostly suspicious looking people are targeted. I was selected for one of these random searches in 1999 while traveling with my mother and brother (keep in mind that this was pre-9/11). It was a short flight with no major cities in between. We were totally unsuspicious (and we didn't have anything on us and were let go, in case someone was interested). Just be careful, and don't think that it couldn't happen to you.

if its been used: either mail it or buy a new one in your new location, i wouldnt suggest cleaning it then carrying it on because its nearly impossible to COMPLETLY clean one.
if it hasnt been used: just stick it in ur pocket, i just carried a 4 inch bowl in my pocket on a flight from cali to new york with no problems. good luck!
