it's not a finished product yet; I'd wait until the next gen of Apple computers come out on the intel chipset and the full OS is released to try it.

Cool nonetheless

The second that I read that I wanted to post something here, but I was sure someone else would and I was too lazy at the time. Heh, heh.

But yeah, holy shit eh. That's fucking crazy! I've always wanted to switch to a mac, but up here they're twice as much than a really good computer, and they're pretty low end. It sucks. Hopefully in a little while I'll have the luxury of setting it up on a new pc! *drool*

/me drools

I'd switch to OS-X in a second, if it could be made to run natively on my x86 PC! My first computer was a Mac (a Macintosh Plus) and I learned how to use it long before I learned how to read :smirk:

But I like the PC architecture more due to availability of add-ons and customizability.

there was a good article on wired about this

one thing that was always apple's big selling point (that everything "just works") is that it's all proprietary hardware... this could be a big headache in finding problems with devices with macs (just like it can be with x86's already)

also; what's the point in porting it to x86 if we're switching to 64 based processing?

The x86 instruction set didn't die out when we switched from 16 to 32 bit processing

I expect 64-bit chips will still be based on the x86 instruction set, as are the current 64-bit chips in production by both AMD and Intel.

With OS-X being built on top of opensource Unix, this is not really much of an issue anymore.

Apple is also doing some very cool work with their developement tools. It is now possible to write (and compile) software that will run on both the PowerPC and Intel x86 chips without having to recompile or buy different versions.

> what's the point in porting it to x86 if we're switching to 64 based processing?

OS-X is already a 64-bit OS. It would be much easier to port to a 64-bit based x86 chip than to a the more common 32-bit based x86 chips, but can still be done. Sun was the first (that I know of) to port a 64-bit OS back to a 32-bit chipset. And what do you mean switching to 64 based processing? I have been running on a 64-bit chip since the mid 90's... too bad almost everybody has been stuck in 32-bit Microsoft Monopoly Land for the last decade.

I don't know the difference between 6xx and x86-64 apparently...

x86 instuction set is for 32 bit right?
x86-64 is the x86 instruction set for 64 bit based processing?
6xx is just a model of intel pentium processors that happen to be 64 bit?

No, not necessarily. It is just an instruction set and can be technically used for any bit-size of chip. The x86 instruction set was used back with 16-bit chips, for example (like the original Intel 8086 16-bit chip, which started the x86 architecture).

x86-64, or any other name currently being used for the home-PC chip market is simply an extension of the x86 instruction set which includes 64-bit instructions.

(edit: made a mistake...IA64 isn't based on x86, it's a whole new architecture)

> x86 instuction set is for 32 bit right?

Nope.  The x86 describes an instruction set based off the Intel 8086 chip designed back in the late 70's.

As intel added more features to the chip, they kept the '86 designation... 8086, 8088 (oops!),  80186 (very few produced), the 80286 (very few produced), the 80386, 80486, etc... After a while, it became easier to just refer to the line of chips as x86 because they all have a common instruction set that is backwards compatible with each other.

> IA64 isn't based on x86, it's a whole new architecture

Correct.  Many people refer to IA32 as a 32-bit Intel Architecture which would encompass the x86 line from the 80386 onward.  This is confusing, because as you point out, the IA64 is not part of the x86 line, yet people still use it to describe 64-bit chips in the x86 line.  Gotta love the marketing yoyo's for keeping everything nice and simple.

Haha yeah, it was better before the Pentium came out...when everyone just used the same numbering system to market their chips!

Of course, such a marketing scheme would probably never have worked in the larger consumer market that PCs now occupy...

I see now why the IA64 has never made it very far (are they still actively marketing them to anyone?) if it wasn't based at all on the x86 architecture...with so much of the consumer AND business market using the x86 line right now the costs of switching to something entirely new, with horrid backwards-compatibility, would be far too prohibitive.

AMD had the right idea, with trying to extend x86 into the 64-bit era (AMD64). I've always preferred AMD where possible (though, I must admit, my current box is a P4).

You will need supported hardware as well as a processor with SSE2 or SSE3 to run it. So basically unless your hardware is supported or you plan to buy a new motherboard it probably wont work right, at least all the features will not be enables like Quartz Extreme. Also keep in mind this is a hacked developers copy of OS X 10.4, there most likely wont be updates made available. The x86 Mac machines dont even start shipping till later next year so if you have supported hardware and want to mess around with it go ahead, but otherwise it is probably not worth your time.
