how do you place the agar on the substrate without a sterile enviroment to work in? how do you ensure the substrate won't contaminate without sterilization?

the best you can do is to buy pre-sterilized jars/bags and a syringe.

you might be able to wash your substrate in peroxide/bleach depending on what you use, but results will not be consistent.

furthermore, once youe increase the size/amount of your substrate, you will not want to take a loss on contamination because of chance. buy a pressure cooker.

there's no such thing as "no sterility" in this hobby. There are times when you dont have to be concerned with it, but you cant get away from being sterile. Give in to the lysol corp.

I think that the problem would be that the peroxide is not 100% effective. In other words, if you spawned mycelium (say a LC) to grains that were say soaked in h2o2 you would probably still end up getting contaminants. It would slow the growth of the mycelium and in the interim other contaminants would get a foothold and carry the day. Best is to give the mycelium a big head start with sterility and let it fights its own battles after its fully colonized.

On the other hand, give it a shot and let us know how it goes.

>sterility... why bother?

Because its the only way to be successful in this hobby. Peroxide is unstable, and breaks down quickly and easily and does not sterilize things well, if at all.

I think he's under the impression that h2o2 kills bacteria and mold as well as spores. h2o2 is only good against spores, as far as I know.
