Ok im a noob and this is my first time growing mushrooms(yellow oyster). my jars are aprox. 50% colonized so it will just be another week or so before im ready to put them in a fruiting chamber. except the only problem is i dont have one and cant find a good cheap one that looks easy to build and looks like it will work. Any ideas or links would be appreciated.
I use 40 gallon see-through Rubbermade storage totes, available at Wall-mart, Costco, K-Mart etc... Just go and get the biggest ones u can find (with lids, flip top if can find) and fruit out of those. Make sure they are clear plastic, because you can then put florescent lights over them on 12-12, ya know wake up turn'em on, go to bed turn'em off. But that's what I do and it works great!
If you have the means to haul one & room to set it up. A DEAD upright freezer is GREAT. Free from most appliance repair places. They are FREE, because they have to pay - to have them hauled away. Just check your local phone book & make a few calls. Tell them you want it - for storage use.
i've grown oysters badly in a chamber (plastic tub and indoor greenhouse) and i've grown em nicely without one (spawned to straw, then once colonised just hung up from the handle of an open window, or from a tree branch outside).
i've found that oysters need plenty air to open up properly, so i'll never grow them in a chamber again. they're also pretty hardy once all substrate is colonised, so you needn't worry too much about where you fruit em. good luck.
